    •   Alocasia 'Red Secret' (Alocasia cuprea) is a rare tropical houseplant native to the rainforests of Borneo, where it grows beneath the forest canopy in warm, humid conditions. It belongs to the Araceae family and is one of the jewel alocasia group, prized by collectors for its metallic foliage.

        The leaves are broad and shield-shaped, with a surface that has a copper-red metallic sheen and deep, contrasting veins pressed into the blade. Undersides are a deep burgundy-purple. New leaves emerge in a glossy red tone before deepening, and each leaf can reach up to twelve inches across on a mature plant.

        As a foliage-focused plant, 'Red Secret' rarely flowers indoors, and bloom details are not well documented in cultivation. It does, however, purify indoor air and has been shown to filter formaldehyde and other airborne toxins. Rotate it regularly so each side receives even light exposure.

        Keep 'Red Secret' away from south-facing windows, where direct sun scorches the leaf surface. It thrives near the natural moisture of a kitchen and does well placed inside a large terrarium. Move it outside for summer, but cover it from rain and bring it back in before temperatures drop. It is sensitive to being moved and may drop a leaf while adjusting to a new spot. Keep it away from heating and air conditioning vents, and place it on a high shelf out of reach of pets and small children, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant is harmful if ingested.

        It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Hawaii, southern Florida, and southern California. It also grows outdoors in parts of Texas, Arizona, and Louisiana with suitable microclimates.
