  •   Alocasia Purple Sword (Alocasia lauterbachiana) is a rare tropical aroid native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, where it grows in warm, humid understory conditions. It belongs to the Araceae family and has gained attention among collectors for its narrow, dramatically elongated leaves.

The leaves grow long and lance-shaped, with deep green upper surfaces and a contrasting purple-burgundy underside. Each leaf has gently undulating edges that give it a wavy, sculptural profile. Sword can reach several feet in height indoors, with leaves extending well past a foot in length on mature plants.

Confirmed flower details for this species are limited, but it does produce the typical aroid spathe-and-spadix flower structure when mature and well-cared-for indoors. The flowers are not the main draw here. It is grown primarily for its foliage, which remains consistent year-round in stable indoor conditions.

Sword is a rare aroid that benefits from rotating every few weeks so each side receives even light exposure. It naturally releases moisture into the surrounding air and thrives near a kitchen where ambient humidity stays higher. Keep it on a high shelf or in a spot out of reach, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation, cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it is best placed away from small children. Avoid positioning it near air conditioning or heating vents, and cover it or bring it indoors if rain is expected, as it is sensitive to sudden environmental changes including being moved to a new location.

  •   Alocasia Purple Sword grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure that scorches its leaves.

It needs watering approximately every 7-10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings; it wilts slightly when dry.

Sword does best in a well-draining, airy mix of peat or coco coir, perlite, and a small amount of orchid bark.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and should not be exposed to drafts or sudden temperature swings.

Sword is a fast-growing plant during the warm months and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, where frost is minimal or absent and temperatures rarely drop below 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Hawaii, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and Oregon's warmer coastal areas. It can move outside for summer in zones 6-8, then return indoors before temperatures drop in autumn.
  • Q: Is Alocasia Purple Sword safe for pets and children?
A: The sap causes skin and paw irritation, and it should not be nibbled or eaten by cats or dogs. Keep it on a high shelf and away from small children.

Q: How do I know when it needs more humidity?
A: Alocasia Purple Sword thrives with humidity above 60%; leaf edges that brown and crisp are a sign the air is too dry. A humidifier, pebble tray with water, or placement near the kitchen helps maintain moisture in the air.

Q: Can Sword grow under office lighting?
A: It can manage under bright LED office lights if the fixture is close enough to provide consistent, strong indirect light throughout the day.

Q: How do I avoid overwatering this plant?
A: Sword is susceptible to root rot if left sitting in soggy soil; if the lower leaves yellow and the soil stays wet days after watering, cut back frequency and check that the pot drains freely.

Q: Is Sword a rare plant?
A: It is considered a rare aroid and is not commonly found in standard garden centers or box stores.

Q: What happens if I move this plant to a new spot?
A: Sword can drop a leaf or show stress after being relocated, even to a spot with similar conditions; keep moves to a minimum and allow several weeks for adjustment.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
