  •   Alocasia Micholitziana 'Frydek', also called Green Velvet Alocasia, is a rare tropical aroid native to the rainforests of the Philippines. It belongs to the Araceae family and grows naturally in warm, humid understory environments beneath dense forest canopies.

The leaves of 'Frydek' are deep, dark green and covered in a soft, velvety texture that sets this alocasia apart from smoother-leaved relatives. Each arrowhead-shaped leaf is traced with bright white veins that cut across the surface in sharp contrast. The plant grows in an upright, clumping habit and can reach two to three feet tall indoors, with individual leaves spanning up to twelve inches.

Flowering on 'Frydek' is infrequent indoors and the blooms themselves are modest, typical of aroids, a pale spathe and spadix that appear occasionally rather than on a predictable seasonal schedule. It is not grown for its flowers. What draws attention instead is how dramatically each new leaf unfurls, emerging tightly rolled before flattening into its full arrowhead form.

Place 'Frydek' near a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture stays naturally higher, or run a humidifier nearby to keep humidity levels consistent. It does well in a terrarium where humidity can be controlled. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, both of which dry the air and cause leaf edges to brown. Rotate the pot every couple of weeks so all sides receive even light exposure. This is a rare collector plant, and cats, dogs, and small children should not be able to reach it. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact, and the plant is harmful if touched or ingested. It purifies indoor air and filters formaldehyde and other toxins, and works well on a high shelf where airflow is stable and access is limited.

  •   Alocasia Micholitziana 'Frydek' grows best in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct rays scorch the velvet leaves.

It needs water every seven to ten days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings; it wilts slightly when dry.

'Frydek' does best in a chunky, well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark to prevent soggy roots.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and should not be exposed to anything below 60°F.

'Frydek' is a moderate grower; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where temperatures stay reliably above 30°F to 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and parts of Texas and Arizona. Move it outside for summer in cooler zones, but cover it from heavy rain and bring it back indoors before nighttime temperatures drop below 60°F.
  • Q: How sensitive is Alocasia Micholitziana 'Frydek' to being moved or repotted?
A: Quite sensitive. Expect a leaf or two to drop after relocation while it adjusts to new light and humidity levels.

Q: What does overwatering look like on this plant?
A: Alocasia Micholitziana 'Frydek' will show yellowing leaves and mushy stems at the base when it has been sitting in too much water for too long.

Q: Can 'Frydek' grow under office LED lighting?
A: It can manage under bright LED grow lights, but standard cool-white office ceiling panels usually fall short of the intensity it needs for healthy leaf production.

Q: Is this plant safe around pets and children?
A: 'Frydek' should be kept on a high shelf or in a spot completely out of reach. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, and the plant is harmful if ingested by cats, dogs, or small children.

Q: How do I know when Green Velvet Alocasia needs water?
A: The leaves will droop or wilt slightly when the soil has dried enough to warrant watering. Check the top inch of soil as well; if it still feels damp, wait another day or two.

Q: Can I move this plant outdoors during summer?
A: Green Velvet Alocasia handles outdoor placement well in warm months, but position it in a sheltered spot with filtered light and cover it from direct rain, which can batter the leaves and oversaturate the soil.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
