  •   Alocasia macrorrhizos Stingray, also called Stingray Elephant Ear, is a rare tropical aroid native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. It belongs to the Araceae family and grows naturally in humid, sheltered environments beneath a dense forest canopy.

Each leaf of 'Stingray' grows on a long, arching petiole and extends outward with a dramatically upswept tip that curves like the tail of a stingray. The broad, arrow-shaped blades are glossy green with pronounced veining and can reach impressive spans on a mature plant. It grows in an upright, rosette-like habit from a central base, with deep, substantial roots that anchor into the soil below.

'Stingray' rarely flowers indoors, and when it does, the blooms are small, pale spathes typical of the aroid family and carry no significant fragrance. It is worth noting that 'Stingray' is a fast-growing indoor plant that actively purifies indoor air, filtering formaldehyde and other airborne toxins while naturally adding moisture to the surrounding air through transpiration.

Place 'Stingray' near a kitchen where ambient moisture from cooking keeps the humidity higher around its leaves. Rotate it every few weeks so each side receives even light exposure. It can move outside for summer, though it needs cover from rain to protect the large leaves from damage. This collector plant should sit in a heavy pot to support its deep root system, positioned on a high shelf or in a spot well out of reach of pets and small children, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant is harmful if touched or ingested.

  •   Alocasia macrorrhizos Stingray grows well in bright indirect light and scorches in south-facing windows with direct afternoon sun.

It needs watering approximately every 7-10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

'Stingray' does best in a chunky, well-draining mix of peat or coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and is sensitive to cold air from air conditioning vents or nearby heaters.

'Stingray' is a fast-growing indoor plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two to four weeks during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, where frost is rare and temperatures stay consistently above 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Arizona, and Hawaii. It can move outside for summer in cooler zones and returns indoors before temperatures dip below 50°F.
  • Q: How much humidity does Alocasia macrorrhizos Stingray need to stay healthy?
A: It prefers humidity above 60%. A humidifier nearby or placement in a naturally moist room like a kitchen helps keep the leaves from drying at the edges.

Q: Why are the leaves wilting on my plant?
A: Alocasia macrorrhizos Stingray wilts slightly when the soil has dried out too long, but wilting can also appear when the roots sit in waterlogged soil. Check the soil moisture before reaching for the watering can.

Q: Is 'Stingray' safe to keep around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat it, and the sap can irritate paws and skin on contact. Keep it on a high shelf well out of their reach.

Q: Can this plant grow under office LED lighting?
A: 'Stingray' can manage under bright office LEDs placed close enough to mimic indirect daylight, though growth will be slower than in a naturally lit room near a window.

Q: Why does Stingray Elephant Ear drop leaves after I bring it home?
A: It is sensitive to being moved and often drops a leaf or two while adjusting to a new environment. Once settled in a consistent spot, it stabilizes and resumes growing.

Q: How large does Stingray Elephant Ear get indoors?
A: Stingray Elephant Ear can reach 3 to 5 feet tall indoors under good conditions, with individual leaves spanning up to 2 feet across on a mature plant.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
