  •   Sempervivum 'Melanie' is a cold-hardy hens and chicks succulent in the Crassulaceae family, bred from alpine species native to the rocky slopes of Europe and Asia Minor. These rosette-forming plants evolved to survive harsh, well-drained mountain conditions, making them among the most resilient succulents for gardeners across a wide range of climates.

It forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from green to burgundy-red, deepening in cooler temperatures and bright sun. The rosettes cluster and spread over time, producing dense mats of color. Individual rosettes typically reach 2 to 4 inches across and spread outward as they produce offsets.

In Sempervivum 'Melanie', individual rosettes bloom once and then die back, but the surrounding chicks fill the gap and keep the display full. Blooming requires a drop in night temperatures, so moving it outside or letting it experience seasonal cool triggers flowering.

Use it in rock gardens, container arrangements, green roofs, balcony planters, and alpine troughs. It handles balcony wind, rain, and drafty outdoor spots without issue. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It tolerates dry heated indoor air. It is pet friendly and safe for cats and dogs. Plant it in a 2" starter pot or spread it across a 4" container.

  •   Sempervivum 'Melanie' grows well in full sun to partial sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every two to three weeks.

Sempervivum 'Melanie' performs best in fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse grit.

It tolerates temperatures from around -30°F up to hot summer highs, making it frost hardy.

Sempervivum 'Melanie' is a moderate, clustering spreader that rarely needs fertilizer, though a light, diluted feed in spring supports healthy offsets.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating frost down to approximately -30°F. It grows outdoors year-round across the northern and central United States, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Utah. It also thrives in warmer regions such as Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Melanie' safe for cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: How much sun does it need to develop color?
A: Sempervivum 'Melanie' deepens its burgundy-red tones in full sun; partial sun works but produces less intense color.

Q: How large do individual rosettes of Sempervivum 'Melanie' get?
A: Each rosette typically reaches 2 to 4 inches across and spreads outward as it produces offsets.

Q: Can I propagate it from the small chicks?
A: Sempervivum 'Melanie' propagates easily by detaching the offset rosettes and replanting them in well-draining soil.

Q: Does Sempervivum 'Melanie' need fertilizer?
A: It rarely needs feeding, but a light, diluted application in spring supports the development of healthy offsets.

Q: What happens to the plant after it blooms?
A: The mother rosette dies back after flowering, which is normal; Sempervivum 'Melanie' produces surrounding chicks that continue growing and fill in the space naturally.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
