  •   Sempervivum 'Histoni' is a rare hens and chicks succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia. This cold hardy plant evolved in rocky, well-drained alpine soils under intense sun and harsh winters, making it one of the toughest succulents available for outdoor gardens.

'Histoni' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from green to deep red tones under bright sun. The plant spreads readily as offsets emerge around the mother rosette, creating a clustering, carpet-like colony.

A bloom stalk rises from the center of the rosette when outdoor temperatures drop seasonally, triggering the flowering cycle that sempervivums require. Once that rosette flowers, it completes its life cycle, but the surrounding offset rosettes continue to grow and eventually bloom in their turn, creating an enduring colony.

'Histoni' handles balcony wind and rain without trouble and tolerates dry heated indoor air just as easily. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside for summer or keep it on a sunny windowsill year-round. It is pet friendly and poses no risk to cats or dogs.

  •   Sempervivum 'Histoni' grows well in partial to full sun, needing 4-6 hours of direct light daily, though intense south-facing windows may scorch leaves.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 10-14 days indoors.

'Histoni' does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse sand at a 1:1 ratio.

It handles a wide temperature range from around 10°F up to 90°F, showing strong frost hardiness in outdoor settings.

'Histoni' is a moderate, steady grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a light diluted feed in spring encourages offset production.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating winter temperatures down to around -30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho, as well as Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York. It also grows in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Nevada.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Histoni' pet friendly?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How does offset propagation work?
A: Sempervivum 'Histoni' naturally produces chicks around the base of the mother rosette that can be gently separated and repotted once they develop roots.

Q: Can 'Histoni' scorch in bright light?
A: Intense south-facing windows may cause leaf scorch, so east or west-facing placement or afternoon shade in the hottest zones works better.

Q: Why is this plant considered rare?
A: 'Histoni' is a collector-grade cultivar, less commonly available than standard sempervivum varieties.

Q: How much space does 'Histoni' need to spread?
A: It clusters readily and can fill a 4" container or wider area in a garden bed within one growing season.

Q: Will it survive outdoors in cold climates?
A: It survives down to -30°F and grows year-round in zones 4 and 5 across the northern United States.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
