  •   Mammillaria Polythele (Martius) Cactus is a rare Mexican cactus from the highlands of central Mexico, belonging to the Mammillaria genus within the Cactaceae family. It grows naturally in rocky, well-drained terrain under bright, intense sunlight and has earned devoted collectors worldwide for its architectural presence and drought tolerant nature.

The plant forms a bold upright column with a forest green body studded with prominent tubercles, earning it the common names nipple cactus and many nippled cactus. Each areole is tipped with neat clusters of spines that catch the light across its textured surface. The silhouette is clean and architectural, whether displayed solo or grouped with other specimens.

It produces small blooms that emerge in a ring around the crown, a classic pincushion cactus trait that appears each season. Night temperature drops encourage flowering, so moving it to a cooler spot in the evening during spring can increase bloom production. It tolerates dry heated indoor air well but responds to seasonal temperature swings.

Mammillaria Polythele fits naturally on bright windowsills, sunny patios, or summer outdoor displays. Move it outside in the warm months, but cover it or shift it to shelter during rain to prevent root rot. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Mammillaria Polythele (Martius) Cactus grows well in partial sun, full sun, and direct sun, though it can scorch in intense south-facing windows during peak summer heat.

Water it deeply every 2–3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

Mammillaria Polythele does best in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix that never holds moisture around the roots.

It prefers temperatures between 50–95°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures approach freezing.

Mammillaria Polythele is an upright grower that benefits from a balanced cactus fertilizer applied once monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, tolerating brief dips down to around 25–28°F but performing best where winters stay mild. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and coastal Oregon. Parts of New Mexico, Arkansas, and the warmest pockets of North Carolina also fall within these zones.
  • Q: Is Mammillaria Polythele (Martius) Cactus pet friendly?
A: The spines are physically sharp, so keep it on a high shelf away from curious pets and small children.

Q: What causes yellowing on the body or tips?
A: Mammillaria Polythele (Martius) Cactus yellows most often from overwatering or soil that stays wet too long. Switch to a grittier mix, reduce watering frequency, and ensure the pot drains freely.

Q: How do I propagate Mammillaria Polythele?
A: Remove an offset when the parent plant produces them, let the cut end callous for a few days, then pot it in dry cactus mix.

    Q: Is this a beginner-friendly plant?
A: Mammillaria Polythele tolerates drought and has a forgiving watering schedule, making it accessible to new plant parents.

Q: Can Mammillaria Polythele be moved outside in summer?
A: Yes, it grows in bright sunny spots outdoors during warm months. Cover it or move it to shelter during rain to prevent root rot from excess moisture.

Q: How long can it survive without water?
A: Mammillaria Polythele survives up to ten days alone without water.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
