  •   Graptopetalum Pachyphyllum, also called Blue Bean, is a drought-tolerant succulent from the Crassulaceae family native to the rocky highlands of Mexico. It brings blue-gray tones to any indoor or outdoor space without demanding constant attention.

The plant forms tight rosettes packed with plump, bean-shaped leaves in blue-gray to purple-pink hues, each coated with a powdery farina that gives them a matte finish. It grows in a clustering, clumping habit that slowly spreads into a dense mat, suited to shallow dish gardens, rock gardens, and succulent arrangements. The leaves stay small and thick, creating a compact profile for desks, shelves, or tabletops.

In spring, small star-shaped flowers emerge in white to pale yellow with subtle spotted markings on short stalks rising above the rosettes. Blooms appear most reliably when the plant experiences cool night temperatures during winter, so placing it near a cool window helps trigger spring flowering. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It tolerates dry heated air from home HVAC systems but appreciates distance from direct AC or heater vents.

Rain can waterlog the roots outdoors, so give it cover during wet seasons if grown outside. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it propagates easily from offsets or individual leaves placed on dry, well-draining soil.

  •   Graptopetalum Pachyphyllum grows well in bright indirect light to partial or full sun, with rotation needed for even rosette growth.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days in summer and every 3 to 4 weeks in winter, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Graptopetalum Pachyphyllum performs best in a gritty, fast-draining mix of cactus soil blended with coarse perlite or pumice at roughly 50/50.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 85°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

Graptopetalum Pachyphyllum is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from diluted balanced fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before needing frost protection. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. It also does well in mild coastal stretches of Oregon and Washington, as well as parts of New Mexico, Arkansas, and North Carolina that fall within zone 9.
  • Q: How often should I water Graptopetalum Pachyphyllum?
A: In warm months, water every 10 to 14 days; in winter, every 3 to 4 weeks. Stick your finger an inch into the soil; if it feels completely dry, water thoroughly.

Q: Is this succulent safe around pets?
A: Graptopetalum Pachyphyllum is non-toxic to cats and dogs and safe for households with animals.

Q: How much light does Graptopetalum Pachyphyllum need indoors?
A: Several hours of indirect or direct sun daily is ideal. Rotate the pot regularly to keep the rosette growing evenly and prevent one-sided growth.

Q: How big does it get?
A: Graptopetalum Pachyphyllum stays compact in height but spreads outward in a clustering, clumping mat, making it suited for shallow pots and dish gardens.

Q: How do I propagate Blue Bean?
A: Offsets or individual leaves can be placed on dry, well-draining soil and will develop roots within a few weeks.

Q: Why is this Blue Bean considered rare?
A: It stands out from common nursery succulents with its distinctive blue-gray leaves and clumping growth habit, contrasting sharply with widely available Echeveria types.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
