  •   Parodia leninghausii, also called Golden Ball Cactus, is a columnar cactus native to the rocky hillsides of southern Brazil and Paraguay. This slow-growing succulent belongs to the Cactaceae family and is valued by both beginner cactus growers and experienced collectors for its ease of care and visual appeal.

Young plants form a globe shape before gradually stretching into an upright, columnar form that can reach 3 feet tall over many years. The plant is covered in a dense coat of soft, golden-yellow spines that radiate from neat areoles along prominent ribs, giving it a warm, glowing appearance. The bright yellow spines are surprisingly soft to the touch compared to most cacti.

Mature Parodia leninghausii plants produce clusters of silky, lemon-yellow flowers that emerge from the crown in late spring through summer. Blooms appear reliably on older specimens and are particularly encouraged by a nighttime temperature drop, making seasonal placement near a cool window a worthwhile strategy.

It tolerates dry heated indoor air and can survive up to ten days without water. Rotate it regularly for even, symmetrical growth, and keep it away from AC or heater vents to avoid stress. Move it outside in summer for a growth boost, though it needs cover from rain to prevent root rot. This cactus is pet-safe for both cats and dogs, and its deep root system means a heavy pot provides long-term stability.

  •   Golden Ball Cactus - Parodia leninghausii (Bare Root) grows well in bright indirect light but tolerates some direct sun and lower light conditions with ease.

Water it deeply every 2–3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter and allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Parodia leninghausii does best in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 50–95°F and should be protected from frost below 30°F.

Parodia leninghausii is a slow grower, typically adding just a few inches per year, and benefits from a light balanced cactus fertilizer once monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, tolerating brief dips to around 25–30°F but performing best in frost-free conditions. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. It also succeeds in select microclimates along the Oregon coast and in favored Zone 9 areas with minimal winter protection.
  • Q: How often should I water Golden Ball Cactus - Parodia leninghausii (Bare Root)?
A: During the growing season, water only after the soil has dried completely. In summer this typically means every 2–3 weeks; in fall and winter, reduce frequency to once a month or less. Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot in cacti.

Q: Is this cactus safe around pets?
A: Golden Ball Cactus - Parodia leninghausii (Bare Root) is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the soft golden spines are still physical, so placement out of curious pets' direct reach is sensible.

Q: How fast does Parodia leninghausii grow?
A: It grows slowly, typically adding just a few inches per year, making it a long-lived option for any space.

Q: What window direction works best indoors?
A: A bright north or east-facing window suits Parodia leninghausii well. It can handle some afternoon sun, though very intense south-facing rays in hot climates may cause slight pale patches on the spines.

Q: When does Golden Ball Cactus bloom?
A: Flowers typically appear in late spring through summer on mature plants, especially when nights are cool in the preceding weeks. The blooms are a vivid lemon-yellow and cluster at the crown.

Q: Can I move it outside in summer?
A: Outdoor placement in warm, sunny conditions during summer accelerates growth significantly. Provide cover from rain to prevent root rot, and bring it back indoors before fall temperatures drop below 50°F.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
