  •   Euphorbia Obesa, also called Baseball Plant, is a rare succulent from the Euphorbia genus native to South Africa's Northern Cape province. Though its nickname suggests otherwise, it is not a true cactus but a euphorbia species that evolved its compact, spherical shape to survive intense drought conditions. It appeals equally to first-time plant owners and seasoned collectors seeking architectural desk plants.

The plant is recognizable by its round to slightly cylindrical body, ribbed with neat vertical segments and patterned in muted green, purple, and yellow-brown tones. Its surface is smooth and spineless, marked with subtle checkered banding that gives every specimen a geometric appearance. It grows upright and eventually clusters over time, typically reaching 3 to 6 inches in height and width, making it ideal for 3" and 4" pot sizes.

Euphorbia Obesa is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female, and both produce tiny, inconspicuous yellowish flowers at the crown during spring and summer. The blooms are small and not showy, but they do produce pollen and can trigger mild allergies in sensitive individuals. If you have a male and female plant together, cross-pollination is possible and seeds may form.

Place it on a sunny windowsill, a desk under bright office LEDs, or outdoors during summer with shelter from direct heavy rain. The milky sap causes skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach of pets and children. It is sensitive to being moved and to airflow from heating or cooling systems, so a consistent, settled spot supports steady growth.

  •   Euphorbia Obesa Cactus grows well in bright indirect light and may scorch in harsh south-facing direct sun.

Water it every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer, reducing to once a month or less in fall and winter.

Euphorbia Obesa does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus and perlite mix that never stays soggy.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 85°F and should be protected from frost below 50°F.

Euphorbia Obesa is a slow grower that benefits from diluted succulent fertilizer once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25-30°F with dry conditions, though frost protection is strongly recommended. It grows outdoors year-round across Florida, Hawaii, California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and coastal areas of Oregon and Washington. It also grows in the warmer Zone 9 fringe of New Mexico, Arkansas, and North Carolina with minimal seasonal care.
  • Q: How often should I water Euphorbia Obesa Cactus?
A: Let the soil dry completely between waterings. Overwatering causes root rot far more quickly than underwatering, so err on the side of drier soil during cooler months.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Euphorbia Obesa Cactus has milky sap that causes skin and paw irritation on contact, so keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of cats and dogs.

Q: Can Euphorbia Obesa be propagated easily?
A: It is most reliably propagated from seed, since it rarely produces offsets when young. You will need both a male and female plant to collect viable pollen and produce seeds.

Q: What happens if there's not enough light?
A: Euphorbia Obesa may stretch and lose its compact, geometric form in low light. It can manage under quality office LEDs, but growth will be slower and less dense.

Q: How big does Baseball Plant get?
A: It typically reaches 3 to 6 inches in height and width, making the compact size suitable for desktop and shelf displays.

Q: Can I move this plant outside in summer?
A: Baseball Plant enjoys outdoor summer conditions but needs shelter from direct heavy rain and harsh midday sun. Bring it back indoors before temperatures drop in autumn.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
