  •   Cotyledon Orbiculata, also called Pig's Ear, is a drought-tolerant succulent native to the rocky slopes and dry scrublands of South Africa. A member of the Crassulaceae family, it has traveled from African hillsides to gardens and windowsills worldwide, earning a reputation as a succulent that grows well on neglect.

The fleshy, paddle-shaped leaves resemble a pig's ear in both shape and texture, growing in an upright rosette formation. Leaves are soft silver-green, coated in a powdery white farina that gives the plant a frosted appearance. Leaf edges often blush with thin red or orange margins, especially under bright light. Growth stays compact and sculptural, making it a neat addition to any sunny shelf or windowsill.

Tubular, bell-shaped flowers in orange to red-orange emerge in late spring through summer on tall arching stems that rise above the rosette. Blooming happens when nighttime temperatures drop, so indoor plants that experience natural seasonal cool-downs in late winter or early spring will set flower buds.

Move it outside in summer in bright, sheltered spots in containers or rock gardens. It handles balcony conditions without trouble but needs cover from rain to prevent rot since it prefers dry conditions. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Keep it away from small children and out of reach of cats and dogs, as it is not safe to eat.

  •   Cotyledon Orbiculata Pig's Ear grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun but scorches in intense south-facing windows during peak summer heat.

Water it deeply every 10-14 days during the growing season, pulling back to once a month or less in winter when growth slows.

Cotyledon Orbiculata does best in a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse grit for excellent drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50-80°F and should be brought indoors before frost, as it is not frost hardy.

Cotyledon Orbiculata is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a diluted balanced fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25-28°F but performing best where winters stay mild. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Along the Oregon coast and in sheltered microclimates of zone 9, it can stay outside through autumn with light frost protection in place.
  • Q: How often should I water Cotyledon Orbiculata Pig's Ear?
A: During the growing season, check soil moisture with your finger an inch deep; water only when the soil is completely dry. In winter, reduce frequency to once a month or less as growth slows significantly.

Q: Is it safe around pets and children?
A: Cotyledon Orbiculata Pig's Ear is toxic to cats and dogs. Store it on a high shelf or sunny spot completely out of reach of small children and pets.

Q: What light does Cotyledon Orbiculata need to avoid leaf scorch?
A: East or west-facing windowsills typically work better than south-facing during hot months. In peak summer, move it back from unshaded south windows to prevent leaf burn.

Q: Can I move it outdoors in summer?
A: Cotyledon Orbiculata thrives outdoors in bright, sheltered spots during warm months. Protect it from rain by covering it or moving it under an overhang, since the leaves are sensitive to prolonged moisture.

Q: How do I get Pig'S Ear to bloom?
A: Allow it to experience cooler nighttime temperatures in late winter or early spring. Tall stems of orange-red tubular flowers should emerge when temperatures drop seasonally.

    Q: How do I propagate Pig'S Ear?
A: Leaf or stem cuttings callous for a day or two before placing on dry, well-draining succulent mix. Roots typically appear within a few weeks in warm, bright conditions.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
