  •   Crassula pellucida ssp. marginalis f. rubra is a rare trailing succulent in the stonecrop family, native to South Africa where it grows on rocky outcrops and cliff faces. Also called the calico kitten succulent, it is collected by plant enthusiasts for its cascading form and purple-pink coloration with cream and green variegation.

The leaves are small and heart-shaped, with purple-pink tones and cream and green variegation along the edges. Each leaf has a translucent quality that lets light filter through, creating a luminous effect when backlit. It grows in chains of rosettes that cascade naturally, forming dense mats of foliage that intensify in color under bright light as the plant clusters and spreads.

It produces tiny white to pale pink star-shaped flowers that emerge from stem tips during spring and summer in small clusters. The foliage shifts deeper in purple and pink during cooler months or with increased light exposure, maintaining its color throughout the year.

Propagation is straightforward through leaf or stem cuttings; allow cut ends to callus for 24 to 48 hours before planting in succulent soil. Individual rosettes stay compact at 1 to 2 inches wide, but trailing stems can cascade 12 to 18 inches long. You can leave it up to ten days without water during its active season.

  •   Crassula pellucida ssp. marginalis f. rubra grows well in bright indirect light or partial sun indoors.

Water it every 7 to 10 days during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Crassula Rubra grows well in well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix with added perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 75°F and cannot tolerate frost or freezing conditions.

Crassula Rubra is a moderate-growing trailing succulent needing minimal fertilizer applied only during spring months.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11 and cannot survive temperatures below 32°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, southern California, southern Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, southern Nevada, and coastal Oregon. It also grows in protected locations within warmer zones in Alabama, Mississippi, and parts of North Carolina.
  • Q: How often should I water Crassula pellucida ssp. marginalis f. rubra?
A: During active growth, check soil moisture by inserting your finger an inch deep; water only when the soil is completely dry. In winter, reduce watering to every 3 to 4 weeks as growth slows.

Q: What happens if you overwater it?
A: Crassula pellucida ssp. marginalis f. rubra develops root rot in persistently wet conditions. Translucent or mushy leaves indicate water damage; repot into fresh, dry soil and let the plant dry out for several weeks before resuming normal watering.

Q: Can Crassula Rubra grow indoors under fluorescent light?
A: Standard fluorescent bulbs alone will not provide sufficient intensity. Place it within a few feet of a south or west-facing window where it receives several hours of natural bright light daily.

    Q: Is propagation difficult?
A: Crassula Rubra propagates easily from both leaves and stems. Callused cut ends nestle into dry succulent soil; mist lightly after one week and water normally once new growth appears.

Q: How fast does Crassula Rubra grow?
A: It produces 2 to 4 inches of new trailing growth annually, with new rosettes appearing throughout spring and summer.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Crassula Rubra may cause mild gastrointestinal upset if chewed or ingested; keep it on a high shelf or in a room where cats and dogs cannot access it.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
