  •   Adenium Socotranum, also called Desert Rose, is a rare succulent native to Socotra Island, a remote archipelago off the Horn of Africa. This drought-tolerant specimen belongs to the Adenium genus within the Apocynaceae family and has evolved a massively swollen trunk base called a caudex to store water through extreme seasonal droughts. This species combines the sculptural form of a bonsai succulent plant with genuine rarity.

The plant grows in an upright, tree-like form with a dramatically thickened, bottle-shaped caudex that often dominates the plant's silhouette over time. Leaves are glossy, leathery, and deep green, clustering near the branch tips and creating a naturally manicured appearance. That swollen base is the signature feature of this full-sun succulent, immediately setting it apart from more common Adenium species.

It produces blooms after a natural drop in nighttime temperatures, which triggers the flowering cycle. Keeping it in direct sun through the growing season combined with that temperature dip will bring out the flowers. Find a stable sunny spot and let it settle in before the season shifts.

Move it outside in summer, though bring it under cover when rain arrives, since excess moisture at the caudex causes rot. Its deep root system requires a heavy, stable pot to anchor the plant and prevent tipping as the caudex swells over years. The sap can cause skin irritation on contact, so keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children.

  •   Adenium Socotranum Desert Rose grows well in bright, direct full sun for at least six hours daily.

Water it deeply every 10-14 days during the warm growing season, then reduce watering significantly in winter dormancy.

Adenium Socotranum does best in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60-95°F and should never experience frost or freezing conditions.

Adenium Socotranum is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from balanced fertilizer during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-12, where temperatures stay above 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in South Florida, Hawaii, the southernmost tip of Texas, and the warmest pockets of Southern California and coastal Southern Arizona. It can also grow outdoors in summer with winter protection in adjacent Zone 9 areas, including Central and Northern California, Gulf Coast regions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, parts of South Carolina, Nevada, and the mild Oregon coast.
  • Q: How much light does Adenium Socotranum Desert Rose need?
A: Rotate the pot periodically so every side receives even light exposure. A south or west-facing window provides the strongest direct sun throughout the day.

    Q: Is the sap toxic?
A: Adenium Socotranum Desert Rose can cause skin and paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of pets and small children.

Q: Can Adenium Socotranum survive a trip without water?
A: You can leave it unwatered for up to 10 days.

Q: What happens if the soil stays too wet?
A: Adenium Socotranum develops rot at the caudex when exposed to excess moisture, especially if the pot lacks drainage holes. Always use a pot with drainage and allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Q: How do I trigger blooms on Desert Rose?
A: Cooler nighttime temperatures combined with consistent direct sun are key to flowering. Avoid moving it once blooms begin to form, as location changes disrupt the cycle.

Q: What pot style works best?
A: A sturdy, heavy terra cotta or ceramic pot with excellent drainage prevents tipping as Desert Rose's caudex expands and anchors the deep root system securely.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
