  •   Adenium Obesum 'Shada' is a rare desert rose succulent native to the arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, where it evolved to store water in its dramatic, swollen caudex. This fat caudex succulent belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is collected worldwide for its sculptural trunk and extraordinary blooms.

It grows in an upright, tree-like form with a thick, bottle-shaped caudex that widens at the base and tapers into branching stems. The leaves are glossy, deep green, and slightly leathery, arranged in loose clusters at branch tips.

It produces vivid, funnel-shaped blooms that emerge most freely during the warm growing season, with a noticeable drop in nighttime temperatures encouraging bud set. The flowers attract pollinators and may produce pollen, so those sensitive to allergens should note when it blooms indoors.

Move it outside in summer to a warm, sunny spot, where extra sun and heat fuel strong growth. Its sap can cause skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of pets and small children. Because its deep root system and heavy caudex can cause tipping, choose a sturdy, stable pot that won't shift.

  •   Adenium Obesum 'Shada' grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, but can scorch in intense south-facing windows during peak summer.

Water it deeply every 10–14 days in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter when the plant rests.

'Shada' does best in a fast-draining mix of cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse pumice to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60–95°F and should never be exposed to frost or prolonged cold below 50°F.

'Shada' is a moderate-grower that benefits from a balanced, phosphorus-rich fertilizer applied monthly during the active spring and summer season.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 10–11, where temperatures stay reliably above 30–35°F. It grows outdoors in Hawaii, South Florida including Miami-Dade, Broward, and the Florida Keys, the southernmost tip of Texas along the Rio Grande Valley, and coastal Southern California including San Diego. It may also be grown outdoors in Arizona's low desert valleys, Nevada's southernmost communities, and coastal areas of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia with careful frost protection during cold snaps.
  • Q: How often should I water Adenium Obesum 'Shada'?
A: Watch the soil; when the top inch feels completely dry, water deeply until it drains from the pot. In summer that's roughly every 10–14 days; in fall and winter, once monthly or less.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: No. Adenium Obesum 'Shada' sap can cause skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of cats and dogs.

Q: Can 'Shada' handle low light indoors?
A: It will survive in bright indirect light but grows best with several hours of direct sun. An east- or west-facing window works well indoors; rotate it regularly for balanced growth.

Q: What makes this cultivar a rare find?
A: 'Shada' is a rare cultivar among desert rose collectors, making it a highly sought-after addition to any caudex plant collection.

Q: Does 'Shada' need a specific pot size?
A: Yes. It develops deep roots and a heavy caudex, so choose a sturdy, heavy pot that won't tip and allows room for the root system to expand.

Q: Can it grow outdoors year-round in warm climates?
A: 'Shada' grows outdoors in USDA Zones 10–11, such as Hawaii, South Florida, southern Texas, and coastal California, but bring it inside or provide frost cover if temperatures drop below 30°F.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
