Tillandsia air plants thrive in bright, indirect light. A spot near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day suits them perfectly. Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure, which can scorch the delicate leaves, and keep them away from deep shade, which will slow their growth significantly.
Water your air plants by misting them lightly two to three times per week, or by removing them from the shells and soaking them in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, shake off any excess water gently and set them upside down to dry for an hour before returning them to their shells. Good air circulation helps prevent moisture buildup at the base.
Tillandsias prefer temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 32 degrees Celsius). They enjoy moderate humidity and do especially well in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture levels tend to be higher. Keep them away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating units, all of which can dry them out quickly.
Feed your Tillandsias once a month using a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer diluted to one quarter strength. Add the fertilizer to your misting or soaking water and apply it sparingly. Regular feeding encourages healthy growth and can even promote blooming, though fertilizer is optional for keeping the plants alive and vibrant.
