  •   Tradescantia Zebrina 'Wandering Dude', also called the inch plant, is a fast-growing trailing houseplant in the Commelinaceae family, native to Mexico and Central America. It grows naturally along the forest floor and in shaded coastal areas, where it spreads quickly across the ground.

The leaves are oval and pointed, each one striped with two silver bands running along a deep green surface, with a purple-red underside that shows clearly when the stems trail downward. Stems are fleshy and jointed at distinct nodes, and new growth unfurls in shades of purple and green. As a trailing houseplant, it extends long stems that hang down from a pot or basket, and the purple-silver foliage stays consistent along the full length of each stem.

Wandering Dude produces small, three-petaled flowers in shades of pink to violet, typically appearing in spring and summer when light levels are higher. The blooms are modest in size but appear regularly on healthy plants grown in bright indirect light. It also filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins, and qualifies as an air purifying plant suited to living rooms, offices, and kitchens.

Hang it in a basket near a north- or east-facing window and rotate the pot every week or two so all sides receive even light. Move it outside in summer to a sheltered spot, and bring it back in before frost, keeping it away from rain exposure. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, so cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant. Keep Wandering Dude on a high shelf or in a hanging position out of reach of pets and toddlers. Stems root easily at the nodes, and the plant has a history of edible and medicinal use in its native range.

  •   Tradescantia Zebrina 'Wandering Dude' grows well in bright indirect light and tolerates lower light indoors.

It needs watering every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

Wandering Dude does best in a well-draining potting mix, such as standard houseplant soil cut with perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heater output.

Wandering Dude is a fast-growing trailing plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 12, where outdoor temperatures stay above 25°F to 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, and South Carolina. It can also stay outside through autumn in zone 9 areas before overnight temperatures drop below its threshold.
  • Q: Is Tradescantia Zebrina 'Wandering Dude' safe for cats and dogs?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap can also cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so keep it on a high shelf or in a hanging basket out of reach.

Q: How do I know when it needs more water?
A: Tradescantia Zebrina 'Wandering Dude' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil before watering, and if it's still damp, wait a few more days.

Q: Can Wandering Dude grow in an office with only artificial light?
A: It can manage under bright LED office lighting placed close to the fixture. Growth will slow compared to a window position, but the plant stays alive and holds its leaf color reasonably well.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Wandering Dude roots easily from stem cuttings placed in water or moist soil. Cut just below a node, remove the lower leaves, and roots typically appear within one to two weeks.

Q: Can Wandering Dude go outside in summer?
A: Move it outside once nighttime temperatures stay consistently above 55°F, in a spot sheltered from direct midday sun and heavy rain. Bring it back indoors before the first frost.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant losing their silver striping?
A: Wandering Dude tends to fade when light levels drop too low. Moving the pot closer to a north- or east-facing window, or rotating it so all sides get even exposure, usually brings the contrast back in new growth.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
