  •   Tephrocactus Inermis, also called Pine Cone Cactus, is a rare, spineless cactus native to the rocky slopes and arid plains of Argentina. It grows naturally in high-altitude desert terrain shaped by intense sun and seasonal drought.

The plant produces segmented, egg-shaped stem joints that stack loosely on top of one another, creating a pine cone-like silhouette. The segments are smooth and spineless, with a soft silver-blue hue, and grow in an upright, clustering form. Each plant develops a sculptural, stacked architecture.

White to pale pink blooms emerge from the tips of upper segments in spring when conditions align. A noticeable drop in nighttime temperature often triggers flowering, so placing it somewhere with natural temperature variation encourages blooms. It tolerates dry, heated indoor air exceptionally well.

The segments detach readily, making propagation straightforward: let a segment dry for a few days, then place it on dry cactus mix and it roots within weeks. Move it outside for summer in a full sun spot to boost growth, though it needs shelter from direct rain since wet conditions cause rot in the loosely stacked joints. This plant is pet-friendly and safe around cats and dogs. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Pine Cone Cactus - Tephrocactus articulatus var. inermis grows well in full direct sun for at least 4-6 hours daily.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer, then reduce to once a month or less in winter.

Tephrocactus Inermis does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix blended with 50% perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 50-95°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

Tephrocactus Inermis is a slow grower requiring only light, diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 8b-11, tolerating brief dips to around 15-20°F with dry conditions. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and coastal Oregon. Warmer pockets of Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia may also support it in sheltered, well-drained spots.
  • Q: How often should I water Pine Cone Cactus - Tephrocactus articulatus var. inermis?
A: Let the soil dry completely between waterings. In the growing season this typically means every 2-3 weeks; in winter, extend intervals to once a month or longer as growth slows.

Q: Is this cactus safe for cats and dogs?
A: Pine Cone Cactus - Tephrocactus articulatus var. inermis is non-toxic and safe for both pets. The segments can detach and become a tripping hazard, so stable placement is still a good idea.

Q: How do I propagate Tephrocactus Inermis?
A: The segments detach readily on their own. Let a segment dry for a few days, then place it on dry cactus mix and it roots within weeks.

Q: Can this cactus stay indoors year-round?
A: Tephrocactus Inermis grows well indoors in a bright, sunny window and tolerates dry indoor air. Moving it outside for summer gives it a growth boost, but it's not required.

Q: Why are the segments of Pine Cone Cactus turning yellow?
A: Yellowing stems typically indicate overwatering or soil that drains too slowly, allowing moisture to linger around the roots. Verify your mix drains fast and water only when completely dry.

Q: Can this cactus handle a vacation absence?
A: Pine Cone Cactus can go ten days without water between absences. Water it well before you leave and it will be fine when you return.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
