  •   Eve's Needle Cactus - Austrocylindropuntia subulata, also called Eve's Needle Cactus, is a columnar desert cactus native to the high-altitude Andes of Peru and Ecuador. This drought-tolerant species grows in rocky, arid terrain and has become a landscape specimen and indoor accent plant worldwide.

Austrocylindropuntia subulata develops an upright, tree-like form with thick green cylindrical stems studded with persistent, fleshy leaves that taper to sharp needle-like points. Long, rigid spines emerge from woolly areoles along each segment, and mature plants develop a woody base that can reach impressive heights, creating an unmistakable silhouette.

When given the right conditions, it produces vivid red to orange-red flowers along its upper stems, typically blooming from late spring through summer. A noticeable drop in nighttime temperatures often triggers flowering, so moving it outdoors for summer typically results in the best floral displays.

Austrocylindropuntia subulata survives neglect, dry heated air, and up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer where it does well on patios and balconies, but bring it under cover during heavy rain since it dislikes waterlogged conditions. The sap can cause skin and paw irritation, and the sharp spines pose a physical hazard, so place it on a high shelf away from small children and pets. Andean communities have a history of using this species for both edible and medicinal purposes.

  •   Eve's Needle Cactus - Austrocylindropuntia subulata thrives in bright direct sun but adapts well to bright indirect light indoors.

Water it every 2-3 weeks during the warm growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, then cut back to once monthly in winter.

Austrocylindropuntia subulata does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix blended with coarse perlite or pumice.

It prefers temperatures between 50-90°F and should be protected from frost.

Austrocylindropuntia subulata is a moderate to fast grower that benefits from a balanced cactus fertilizer applied once monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best where hard freezes are rare. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Hawaii. Gardeners along the Oregon coast and in protected pockets of New Mexico and Arkansas may also find success with outdoor cultivation in sheltered spots.
  • Q: How much light does Eve's Needle Cactus - Austrocylindropuntia subulata need?
A: Position it in a south- or west-facing window for full sun. Very intense reflected heat can cause scorching, so watch for pale or bleached spots and adjust placement if needed.

Q: How often should I water during the growing season?
A: Eve's Needle Cactus - Austrocylindropuntia subulata should be watered when the top inch of soil is completely dry; this typically falls every 2-3 weeks in warm months but varies with light and humidity.

Q: Is Austrocylindropuntia subulata safe around pets and children?
A: No. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, and the sharp spines pose a physical hazard, so keep it on a high shelf away from small children and curious pets.

Q: Can I move it outside for the summer?
A: Austrocylindropuntia subulata does well outdoors and often blooms most prolifically after summer sun exposure. Transition it gradually to avoid stress, and provide cover during heavy rain to prevent waterlogging.

Q: How fast does Eve'S Needle Cactus grow?
A: It is a moderate to fast grower compared to many cacti, putting on noticeable height each season with plenty of sun and appropriate watering. Rotate the pot periodically for even, upright growth on all sides.

Q: Can I leave it unwatered while traveling?
A: Eve'S Needle Cactus tolerates drought well and can go 10 days or more without water. Ensure it has good light and is not positioned in a draft from an air conditioner or heater before you leave.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
