  •   Crassula Variegata, also called Variegated String Of Buttons, is a succulent in the Crassulaceae family native to rocky outcrops and scrublands of South Africa. The plant grows well in bright, dry conditions with excellent drainage and grows quickly.

Pairs of triangular leaves stack tightly around a central stem in a spiral pattern, creating the button-like appearance the plant is named for. The foliage is green, cream, and soft yellow with blush-pink edges that deepen under bright sun exposure. It grows upright and clumping when young, then develops trailing stems as it matures, reaching roughly 2 inches tall in its compact form before spreading sideways.

Small clusters of pale yellow to white star-shaped flowers appear in late winter to spring. A cool nighttime temperature drop in autumn encourages blooming. The plant can tolerate extended periods between waterings due to water storage in its succulent leaves. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Hang it in a basket with sturdy support, or place it on a shelf where the trailing stems can spread. Move it outside in summer to a bright, sheltered spot, but bring it inside before heavy rain or frost arrives. It propagates easily from stem cuttings. Keep it away from pets and small children, as it is toxic if ingested and its sap can irritate skin and paws.

  •   Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variegata grows well in bright indirect light to partial or full sun, but scorches in intense south-facing windows.

Water it every 10–14 days in summer, reducing to about once a month in winter, always letting soil dry completely between waterings.

Crassula Variegata does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with 30–50% perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 65–80°F and must be protected from frost below 30°F.

Crassula Variegata is a fast-growing succulent needing only light feeding with diluted balanced succulent fertilizer once or twice during the growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to 25–30°F before needing frost protection. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. It also grows well in sheltered coastal areas of Oregon and Washington, and in zone 9 pockets of New Mexico, Arkansas, and parts of the Pacific Northwest with minimal winter protection.
  • Q: Is Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variegata toxic to pets?
A: It is toxic if ingested by cats, dogs, or other pets, and its sap can cause skin and paw irritation. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach.

Q: Can I display this plant in a hanging basket indoors?
A: Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variegata looks best in a hanging basket where its trailing stems can spill over, or on a shelf near a bright window.

Q: What light conditions does Crassula Variegata prefer indoors?
A: A bright spot near a window works well; morning sun or afternoon shade prevents leaf scorch, while south-facing windows may be too intense during peak summer hours.

Q: Can I propagate this plant at home?
A: Crassula Variegata propagates easily from stem cuttings. Allow the cut end to callous for a day or two, then place it in dry succulent mix and water lightly once roots appear.

Q: Does Variegated String Of Buttons need frequent watering?
A: No. The succulent leaves store water, so you can skip watering for extended periods; overwatering causes root rot far more than underwatering.

Q: Which US regions allow year-round outdoor growth for this plant?
A: Variegated String Of Buttons grows outdoors year-round across the South and Southwest, including Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, Hawaii, and the Gulf states. In cooler zones, bring it inside before frost.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
