  •   Senecio Cocoon, also called Woolly Senecio, is a succulent in the Senecio genus native to the dry coastal regions of South Africa. It grows naturally in rocky, arid landscapes where bright light and minimal rainfall are the norm. This plant has earned a following among collectors and home decorators for its unusual appearance and forgiving nature.

The leaves are plump and elongated, densely covered in white, silvery-gray fuzz that resembles a cocoon, which is exactly how the plant gets its name. It grows upright in a compact, sculptural form that stays tidy without sprawling, making it a standout piece for shelves, desks, and home or office decoration displays. The gray-toned foliage stands out among typical green succulents and serves as a visual anchor in any grouping.

Small yellow-orange flowers appear on slender stems during cooler months when nighttime temperatures drop slightly. The blooms are modest but add seasonal interest to the silver-white foliage. A cooler windowsill in autumn or winter encourages the best flowering results.

Move it outside in summer to a warm spot, but shelter it from rain to protect the woolly leaves from moisture damage. It tolerates dry heated indoor air and low humidity, making it at home in most climates year-round. Keep it on a high shelf away from small children and pets, as cats and dogs should not nibble or eat it. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Senecio Cocoon Plant - Woolly Senecio grows well in bright indirect light and should be rotated regularly for even growth. Avoid direct south-facing sun, which can scorch the fuzzy foliage.

Water it every 10-14 days, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is highly drought tolerant.

Senecio Cocoon does best in a well-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with perlite for optimal root health.

It prefers temperatures between 50-80°F and should be protected from frost below 30°F.

Senecio Cocoon is a slow to moderate grower needing only light fertilizing once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25-30°F before needing frost protection. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Hawaii. It also grows in sheltered coastal pockets of Oregon and along the warmer stretches of the Gulf Coast, low desert regions of southern Nevada and Utah.
  • Q: How often should I water Senecio Cocoon Plant - Woolly Senecio?
A: Check the soil before watering; if it is bone dry, water thoroughly and let it drain. If it still holds moisture, wait another few days. Overwatering causes root rot much faster than underwatering harms this drought-tolerant plant.

Q: What does scorching from direct sun look like?
A: Senecio Cocoon Plant - Woolly Senecio leaves will develop brown or bleached patches where intense afternoon rays hit the fuzzy coating. Move it a few feet back from a south-facing window or filter the light with a sheer curtain.

Q: Is Senecio Cocoon safe around pets and children?
A: The sap can cause skin or paw irritation, so place it on a high shelf where cats, dogs, and small children cannot reach it or nibble the leaves.

Q: Can I grow it outdoors permanently?
A: Senecio Cocoon can stay outside year-round in USDA zones 9-11, but bring it indoors before temperatures approach 30°F in colder regions. It also needs shelter from rain to prevent moisture from damaging the fuzzy leaves.

Q: Does Woolly Senecio grow fast?
A: It grows slowly to moderately, so expect gradual size increases over the growing season. Light spring and summer feeding supports this gentle pace without pushing unnecessary growth.

Q: Why does mine look pale or faded?
A: Woolly Senecio needs bright indirect light to keep its silvery-gray fuzz vivid; without enough light, the foliage can appear duller. Rotate it regularly and position it near an east- or west-facing window for balanced illumination.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
