  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Milady' is a rare cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky mountain slopes of central and southeastern Europe. This alpine succulent forms tight, ground-hugging rosettes that multiply into dense clumps over time, evolved to withstand extreme high-altitude conditions. It ranks among the most frost tolerant succulents you can grow outdoors year-round across much of North America.

Milady produces symmetrical rosettes with thick, fleshy leaves in burgundy and deep green tones that intensify under strong light. The leaf tips carry subtle pointed definition, giving each rosette a structured appearance from common hens and chicks varieties. As a clumping rosette succulent, it slowly spreads to form a dense mat equally at home in a pot or tucked into a rock garden.

Individual rosettes are monocarpic, meaning they bloom once in summer with star-shaped flowers, then the parent rosette steps aside as offsets surrounding it continue the clump. The pollen can trigger allergies in sensitive gardeners. Milady can stay outdoors well into autumn without any fussing, and you can leave it up to ten days without water.

This plant is pet friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. Move it outside on a balcony or into the garden; it handles wind and rain with ease. Milady survives prolonged neglect and adapts to container displays and drought tolerant landscapes alike. It propagates naturally by producing offsets that cluster around the mother rosette and can be gently separated once they reach a good size.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Milady' grows well in partial to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct sun daily.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Milady does best in a gritty, well-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with 50% perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures from around -30°F in winter up to warm summer highs with excellent frost tolerance.

Milady grows slowly to moderately and needs little to no fertilizer, perhaps one light feeding in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3-9, tolerating frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It grows equally well in cooler inland regions of New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and parts of Nevada and California.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Milady' pet friendly?
A: This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs and poses no risk in pet-owning households.

Q: What window direction works best for strong color development?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Milady' develops its deepest burgundy tones in south or west-facing locations with direct afternoon sun. North or east windows will work but may show less color intensity.

Q: How big do the rosettes of Milady get?
A: Individual rosettes typically reach 2-4 inches across, and over time the clumping habit creates a spreading mat that fills containers and rock garden spaces.

    Q: What happens if overwatered?
A: Milady is susceptible to root rot when soil stays wet. Always let the soil dry completely between waterings to prevent this issue.

Q: Does Milady need winter protection outdoors?
A: It does not require winter protection in USDA zones 3-9, surviving temperatures far below 0°F without any covering or shelter.

    Q: How does propagation work?
A: Milady produces offsets naturally that cluster around the mother rosette. Once they reach a good size, gently separate and replant them into fresh, dry soil.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
