  •   Sedum sexangulare, also called Tasteless Stonecrop, is a low-growing creeping succulent native to central and southern Europe, where it carpets rocky slopes, walls, and dry grasslands. A member of the Crassulaceae family, this cold hardy ground cover has naturalized across temperate regions worldwide and is valued by gardeners for its toughness and year-round density.

The foliage earns the name six-sided stonecrop from its tiny cylindrical leaves arranged in six neat spiraling rows around each stem, creating a watch-chain texture. Leaves are forest green and tightly packed, almost scale-like, forming dense low mats that spread outward in a clustering, upright habit. The plant reaches only a few inches tall and spreads outward steadily, its form staying consistent in color throughout most of the year.

In early to midsummer, the plant produces star-shaped yellow flowers that smother the mats in golden blooms. The flowers carry little to no fragrance but appear in abundance, attracting pollinators during the bloom window. Sedum Sexangulare does produce pollen, so those with seasonal sensitivities may want to note this before planting.

Move it outside in summer and it handles balcony wind and drafty spots without trouble. The plant can stay outdoors well into autumn and is safe for households with cats and dogs. Use it between stepping stones, in raised beds, rock gardens, or as a living ground cover. Propagation is simple: snip a short stem, let the cut end callous for a day or two, then press it onto well-draining soil; new roots form within two to three weeks. With proper division, it spreads into wide mats over one to two seasons, becoming an heirloom planting that improves each year.

  •   Sedum sexangulare grows well in bright indirect light indoors and tolerates direct sun outdoors, though intense south-facing windows can scorch the foliage.

Water it every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, and reduce to monthly in winter.

Sedum Sexangulare grows well in fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or grit to prevent root rot.

It handles temperatures from 10°F up to 85°F and remains exceptionally frost tolerant for a succulent.

Sedum Sexangulare is a moderate to fast spreader outdoors and benefits from light trimming after flowering to keep its mat tidy; feed lightly once in spring.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 9, tolerating frost down to approximately 30°F at the colder end of that range. It grows outdoors across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Kentucky. It also performs well in Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona at elevation, Nevada, California, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, extending reliable ground cover succulent coverage across nearly the entire country.
  • Q: How often should I water Sedum sexangulare?
A: During the growing season, water when the top inch of soil feels dry; in winter, reduce frequency to once monthly or less. Overwatering causes root rot far more often than underwatering does with this species.

Q: Is this plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: Sedum sexangulare is non-toxic and poses no danger to cats or dogs.

Q: Can Sedum Sexangulare grow indoors?
A: It can survive indoors in bright indirect light, though growth is steadier and more compact than outdoors; it prefers to be moved outside for summer.

Q: What does scorching look like on this plant?
A: Sedum Sexangulare develops brown or bleached patches on the foliage when exposed to intense afternoon sun in south-facing windows; it recovers when moved to filtered light.

Q: How fast does Tasteless Stonecrop spread?
A: In good sun and well-draining soil, it spreads at a moderate to brisk pace, with mature mats reaching several inches wide within one to two seasons.

Q: Why are the leaves turning yellow?
A: Tasteless Stonecrop leaves yellow most often from overwatering or poor drainage; allow soil to dry completely between waterings and confirm the pot or planting site has adequate drainage holes.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
