  •   Kalanchoe luciae, also called Paddle Plant, is a succulent in the Crassulaceae family native to the rocky slopes and grasslands of South Africa. This drought-tolerant species has become a worldwide favorite for its bold, sculptural form and minimal care demands.

The plant is recognizable by its large, flat, rounded leaves stacked in an upright rosette that resembles a stack of flapjacks. Leaves are forest green with vivid red-tipped edges that intensify in bright light and cooler temperatures. As a clustering, wide-spreading grower, it builds into an impressive display over time.

Given the right conditions, it produces tall flower stalks topped with clusters of small, tubular yellow blooms that appear in late winter to early spring. A nighttime temperature drop in autumn is the key trigger for blooming. The flowers are lightly fragrant.

Kalanchoe luciae is a slow grower that does well with minimal fuss. Its bold form works well in modern interiors and can be moved outside for summer to soak up bright, sheltered conditions. Keep it protected from heavy rain outdoors, as excess moisture causes rot. The sap can irritate skin and paws, so place it on a high shelf away from cats, dogs, and small children.

  •   Paddle Plant (Flapjacks) - Kalanchoe luciae grows well in bright indirect light and tolerates some direct sun, though intense south-facing windows can scorch the leaves.

Water it every 10-14 days in summer and once every 3-4 weeks in winter, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Kalanchoe luciae does best in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85°F and cannot tolerate frost below 25°F.

Kalanchoe luciae is a slow grower needing only light fertilizing once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best with frost-free winters. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, Southern California, coastal Oregon, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. It also does well in Nevada's warmer valleys, New Mexico's southern regions, and parts of Arkansas and North Carolina's coast.
  • Q: How often should I water Paddle Plant (Flapjacks) - Kalanchoe luciae?
A: Water every 10-14 days during the growing season and once every 3-4 weeks in winter. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot.

Q: Is it safe around pets and children?
A: Paddle Plant (Flapjacks) - Kalanchoe luciae is toxic to cats and dogs; sap contact can cause skin or paw irritation. Keep it on a high shelf away from pets and small children.

Q: What window direction works best for Kalanchoe luciae?
A: East or west-facing windows provide bright indirect light with some direct morning sun for the best leaf color. Rotate it regularly for even, upright growth.

Q: How do I trigger blooming in this plant?
A: Kalanchoe luciae needs a consistent nighttime temperature drop in autumn to set buds for late-winter flowers. Moving it near a cool window as temperatures fall is usually sufficient.

Q: How fast does Paddle Plant grow?
A: It grows slowly, gradually clustering outward into a wide rosette display. Light fertilizing once or twice yearly in the growing season supports healthy development.

Q: Can I move this plant outside?
A: Paddle Plant loves spending summer outdoors in a bright, sheltered spot away from heavy rain. Bring it back indoors before temperatures approach freezing.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
