  •   Haworthia Chocolate (Haworthia retusa hybrid) is a rare compact succulent in the Asphodelaceae family, native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It grows in rocky, semi-arid terrain where it shelters under shrubs and receives filtered light.

The leaves are thick, fleshy, and triangular, forming a tight rosette that stays compact even at full maturity. The leaf color runs from deep olive-green to dark bronze-brown, deepening toward chocolate tones under brighter conditions. Leaf surfaces are semi-translucent at the tips, with faint windowed areas that allow light to pass through to the inner tissue.

Haworthia Chocolate can produce slender white tubular flowers on thin stalks, typically in late spring or early summer. A slight drop in nighttime temperatures encourages blooming. It is pet-friendly, so there is no concern placing it anywhere in a home shared with cats or dogs.

Rotate it a quarter turn every few weeks so each side receives even light exposure. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, though it handles dry heated indoor air without trouble. You can move it outside for summer, but cover it from rain and direct downpours. It fits well inside a terrarium, and you can leave it up to ten days without water. Haworthia Chocolate is a rare find in the succulent world and one that stays small enough for a desk, shelf, or windowsill arrangement.

  •   Haworthia Chocolate grows well in bright indirect light and can manage under office LED lighting without issue.

Water it every 10-14 days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

Haworthia Chocolate does best in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix combined with coarse perlite or pumice.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should be kept away from cold drafts below 50°F.

Haworthia Chocolate is a slow grower that stays under 4 inches wide; feed it with a diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief lows down to around 25°F before frost damage becomes a risk. It grows outdoors year-round in southern California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, Hawaii, and coastal areas of the Carolinas and the Gulf Coast states.
  • Q: Is Haworthia Chocolate safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and pet-friendly for both cats and dogs.

Q: How much light does this succulent need?
A: Haworthia Chocolate grows well a few feet back from an east- or west-facing window. South-facing windows can scorch the leaves, so keep it behind a sheer curtain or off to the side if that is your only option.

Q: Can Haworthia Chocolate stay outside in autumn?
A: It can stay outside into early autumn as long as nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F. Bring it in before the first cold snap.

Q: How do I know if I am overwatering this plant?
A: Haworthia Chocolate will develop soft, mushy leaves at the base when overwatered, and the roots may begin to rot. When in doubt, wait another few days before watering.

Q: Does Haworthia Chocolate need to be repotted often?
A: No. Because it is a slow grower, it can stay in the same pot for two to three years before needing a size up.

Q: Is this succulent hard to find?
A: Haworthia Chocolate is considered a rare succulent and is not commonly stocked in garden centers, which makes it a sought-after addition for collectors.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
