  •   Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' (a hybrid between Gasteria and Aloe) is a compact rosette-forming succulent that combines the best traits of both parent genera. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family and originates from cultivated hybrid breeding programs inspired by the arid regions of southern Africa where its parent species are native. This rare succulent has a devoted following among collectors who seek unusual, low-light tolerant plants with architectural leaf structure.

The leaves are thick, tongue-shaped, and arranged in a tight, symmetrical rosette. They are deep green and heavily spotted with white or pale markings across the surface, giving the plant a two-toned pattern. The leaf edges carry fine teeth, and the overall rosette stays compact, typically reaching 6 to 8 inches across at maturity.

Gasteraloe hybrids produce tubular, coral-to-orange-pink flowers on a slender upright stem when given a nighttime temperature drop during the cooler months. It tends to bloom in late winter to spring. The flowers are not fragrant but attract pollinators when placed outdoors. This gasteria aloe hybrid is one of the few succulents that performs well in office environments and under standard LED grow lights without additional supplemental lighting.

Rotate it every few weeks so all sides receive even light exposure. You can move it outside for summer, but keep it sheltered from direct rainfall and cover it during heavy rain, since the rosette traps moisture and can rot. Keep it on a high shelf out of the reach of children and pets, as the sap can cause skin and paw irritation. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it handles the dry, heated air common in winter apartments and offices. Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' is genuinely rare in the houseplant trade, and each plant develops a slightly individual spotting pattern.

  •   Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' grows well in bright indirect light and adapts to medium or office LED light without losing its compact form.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in spring and summer, and reduce to once a month in winter, letting the soil dry fully between waterings.

Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' does best in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with coarse perlite at a 2:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units that blast dry, moving air.

Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' is a slow-growing succulent; feed it once in spring and once in early summer with a diluted, balanced fertilizer at half strength.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, tolerating outdoor temperatures down to around 25°F to 28°F for brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and coastal Georgia and South Carolina. In zone 9 it can stay outside through autumn before being brought indoors ahead of hard frost.
  • Q: Is Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' safe for cats and dogs?
A: The sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, and ingestion may cause mild digestive upset in pets. Keep it out of reach of animals and small children.

Q: How do I know if I'm overwatering this succulent?
A: Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' shows overwatering through soft, translucent leaf bases and a mushy stem at the soil line. If the lowest leaves feel squishy rather than firm, let the soil dry out completely before watering again and check that the pot drains freely.

Q: Can Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' grow in a north-facing room?
A: It can manage in a north-facing room, but growth will be slower and the white spotting on the leaves may become less defined. An east-facing window or a spot within three feet of a south or west window behind a sheer curtain works better.

Q: How do I propagate this succulent at home?
A: Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' propagates most reliably through offsets, the small pups that form at the base of a mature rosette. Wait until a pup is at least one-third the size of the mother plant, then separate it with a clean knife, let the cut end callous for a day or two, and pot it in dry succulent mix.

Q: Does Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' scorch in direct sun?
A: Yes, direct sun through a south-facing window will bleach and scorch the leaf surfaces within days. The white spots fade first, followed by dry, papery patches along the leaf tips.

Q: Will leaves turn yellow, and is that normal?
A: A few yellow leaves at the base of the rosette are normal as older growth ages out. If Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness' develops yellow leaves across the whole rosette, the most common causes are overwatering, a pot without drainage, or roots sitting in soggy soil.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
