  •   Cotyledon Tomentosa, also called Bear Paw, is a rare and drought-tolerant succulent native to South Africa, where it grows in rocky, arid landscapes with excellent drainage and abundant sun. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family and has earned a devoted following among collectors worldwide for its distinctive appearance and beginner-friendly care.

The leaves are the standout feature: plump, velvety, and bright green, each one tipped with deep burgundy-red "claws" that resemble a tiny bear's paw. A dense white fuzz coats every leaf, creating soft tactile appeal, while the upright, clumping growth habit keeps the plant tidy and full as it matures. Individual leaves reach around 2 inches long, and the compact form gradually clusters into a fuller specimen over time.

When given a drop in nighttime temperatures, it may produce tall, arching flower stalks topped with tubular orange-red blooms in spring. The flowers stand out against the fuzzy green foliage. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Place it on a bright windowsill, sunny shelf, or patio display in summer, where it clusters over time. Move it outside once warm weather settles in, but keep it covered from rain and sheltered when autumn arrives. The sap can cause skin and paw irritation, so keep it away from cats, dogs, and small children on a high shelf. Propagation works best from stem cuttings allowed to callous for a few days before being set in dry succulent mix.

  •   Cotyledon Tomentosa Bear Paw grows well in bright indirect light to partial or full sun, though it can scorch in intense south-facing windows.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, pulling back to once a month or less in winter.

Cotyledon Tomentosa does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite for optimal root health.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 80°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

Cotyledon Tomentosa is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a light, balanced succulent feed once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before needing frost protection. It grows outdoors in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Outdoor growers along the Oregon coast and in parts of New Mexico and coastal North Carolina can often grow it outdoors as well, while gardeners in cooler zones can enjoy it as a thriving indoor or patio plant brought in before first frost.
  • Q: How often should I water Cotyledon Tomentosa Bear Paw?
A: Every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, letting the soil dry completely between waterings. Cut back to once a month in winter to avoid rot.

Q: Is this succulent safe for pets and children?
A: Cotyledon Tomentosa Bear Paw's sap can cause skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf away from cats, dogs, and small children.

Q: Can Cotyledon Tomentosa survive outdoors in winter?
A: It survives brief freezes to around 25°F but needs frost protection below that. Move it indoors before nighttime temperatures drop in autumn if you live outside zones 9-11.

Q: What does scorching look like on this plant?
A: Cotyledon Tomentosa develops pale or bleached patches on leaves when exposed to harsh afternoon sun through south-facing windows. Move it to bright indirect light or partial sun to prevent damage.

Q: How big does Bear Paw get?
A: It typically reaches 12 to 18 inches tall and wide at maturity, growing in an upright, clumping form. Slow to moderate growth means it stays compact for years.

Q: How do I propagate this succulent?
A: Bear Paw propagates best from stem cuttings: allow them to callous for a few days, then place in dry succulent mix. Leaf propagation is possible but slower and less reliable with this species.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
