  •   Cotyledon Orbiculata Var. Flanaganii is a rare drought-tolerant succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky, arid regions of South Africa. It has adapted to grow well in well-draining soils, intense sun, and minimal rainfall. This succulent has an unusual form and resilience valued by collectors.

It forms upright, clumping rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves in soft gray-green tones with a powdery, chalky coating. The leaves are rounded and paddle-shaped with subtle reddish margins that deepen in bright light. Its compact, symmetrical growth habit makes it visually distinctive whether displayed in a 2" starter pot or grown into a full 4" specimen.

In late spring to summer, it can produce tall, arching flower stalks topped with nodding, tubular blooms in warm orange-red hues, typically appearing when given a nighttime temperature drop. The flowers are long-lasting and rise well above the low rosette.

Move it outside in summer to encourage faster growth and richer leaf color. Bring it inside before rainy stretches arrive, as it needs cover from prolonged wet conditions. The plant is toxic to cats and dogs, so place it on a high shelf away from pets and small children. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Cotyledon Orbiculata Var. Flanaganii grows well in bright indirect light to full direct sun, though intense south-facing windows during peak summer may cause leaf scorch.

Water it deeply every 10-14 days in summer, reducing to once every 3-4 weeks in winter, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Cotyledon Flanaganii does best in a gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with perlite or coarse sand at a 50/50 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 50-85°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

Cotyledon Flanaganii grows at a slow to moderate pace and benefits from diluted balanced fertilizer applied once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best where winters stay mild. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and coastal Oregon. In warmer pockets of New Mexico, Arkansas, and North Carolina in zone 9, it grows outdoors with light winter protection.
  • Q: How often should I water Cotyledon Orbiculata Var. Flanaganii?
A: Every 10-14 days during the growing season with the soil drying completely between waterings. Cut back to once every 3-4 weeks in winter.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Cotyledon Orbiculata Var. Flanaganii is toxic to cats and dogs, and the sap may cause skin or paw irritation. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach.

Q: What window direction works best for Cotyledon Flanaganii?
A: South and west-facing windows provide the most light and bring out deeper red tones on the leaf edges. Rotate the pot regularly to encourage even growth.

Q: Can I take this plant on vacation?
A: Cotyledon Flanaganii can go 10 days without water if you water thoroughly before leaving and place it in bright indirect light.

Q: Does Cotyledon Flanaganii ever flower indoors?
A: It can produce orange-red tubular flowers in late spring to summer if given a nighttime temperature drop of about 10°F, though this is less reliable indoors than outdoors.

Q: How fast does it grow?
A: Cotyledon Flanaganii has slow to moderate growth and reaches full size over a couple of years. Outdoor summer placement accelerates growth compared to year-round indoor cultivation.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
