  •   Senecio mandraliscae, also called Blue Chalk Sticks, is a succulent in the Asteraceae family native to rocky coastal regions of South Africa. It grows well in dry, well-drained soils with plenty of sun.

The pencil-thin cylindrical leaves are silvery-blue to blue-gray, slightly curved, and coated in a powdery farina that gives the plant its signature chalk-dusted appearance. It grows in a clumping, upright, and gently trailing habit that spreads generously, creating a soft, flowing groundcover effect or a cascading display from a hanging basket.

Small white to cream-colored daisy-like flowers appear on tall slender stems, typically in late fall to winter. The blooms can attract pollinators when grown outdoors; note that the plant produces pollen and allergens, so those with sensitivities should keep it in well-ventilated spaces.

Propagation is simple: snip a healthy stem, let the cut end callous for 24-48 hours, then plant it in dry succulent soil, and new roots establish quickly. Use it in container gardening, rock gardens, and sunny borders, or move it outside for summer where it does well in bright, partially sunny spots and handles balcony conditions well. Keep it on a high shelf or out of reach, as cats and dogs shouldn't nibble or eat the plant, and it's best placed away from small children.

  •   Senecio mandraliscae Blue Chalk Sticks grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun but may scorch in intense south-facing windows.

Water it every 10-14 days during spring and summer, reducing to once a month in fall and winter.

Senecio mandraliscae grows best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix amended with extra perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 65-85°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop below 25°F.

Senecio mandraliscae is a moderate grower that benefits from a light balanced liquid fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 10 and 11, tolerating brief dips but not sustained frost below approximately 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in southern Florida, coastal and southern California, Hawaii, southern Texas, southern Arizona, and parts of Nevada. It may also succeed in sheltered, frost-light microclimates in Louisiana, coastal Georgia, coastal South Carolina, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi.
  • Q: How often should I water Senecio mandraliscae Blue Chalk Sticks?
A: Every 10-14 days during active growth and once a month in cooler months. The leaves will soften slightly or droop when soil has dried completely.

Q: Is this plant toxic to pets?
A: Senecio mandraliscae Blue Chalk Sticks is toxic to cats and dogs. The sap can cause skin or paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach.

Q: How do I propagate Senecio mandraliscae?
A: Cut a healthy stem, allow the end to callous for 24-48 hours, then press it into dry succulent soil. Roots form within 2-3 weeks.

Q: Why are the leaves turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves are most commonly caused by overwatering or poor drainage, which stresses the roots. Pull back on watering, ensure your pot drains freely, and Senecio mandraliscae should bounce back quickly.

Q: Can Blue Chalk Sticks be grown outdoors year-round?
A: Only in USDA Zones 10 and 11. It can spend summer outdoors in northern regions but must be brought inside before nighttime temperatures approach freezing.

Q: What pot size works best?
A: Blue Chalk Sticks does beautifully in 2" starter pots for small cuttings and grows well in standard 4" or larger containers as it matures. Choose a pot with drainage holes and avoid oversizing, as excess soil holds moisture.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
