It evolved to store water in its plump leaves and survive in lean, dry conditions. It grows well as a houseplant for both beginners and experienced collectors.

        Small, coin-shaped leaves stack tightly along upright stems that gradually trail over pot edges in a clumping growth habit. The foliage shifts from green to red or orange at the tips when exposed to bright light. The leaf arrangement resembles beads threading along a necklace, which inspired the plant's common name.

        Small clusters of white to pale pink star-shaped flowers emerge in late winter to spring. A slight drop in nighttime temperatures during autumn can encourage blooming. The flowers are modest but fragrant.
