  •   Autumn' Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora), also called Japanese Shield Fern, is a semi-evergreen woodland fern native to eastern Asia, including Japan, China, and Korea. It belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae and grows naturally on forest floors in shaded, humid conditions.

The fronds emerge in shades of copper and bronze, gradually shifting to deep green as they mature, with new growth flushing those warm tones again each season. Each frond is broadly lance-shaped, made up of finely cut pinnate leaflets that give the plant a layered, airy texture. Autumn Fern typically reaches 18 to 24 inches tall with an arching, clumping habit.

As a fern, it does not produce flowers or set seed through blooms. It reproduces through spores that form in small clusters called sori on the undersides of mature fronds. The copper fronds and sori are among the most consistent features for identifying it in the garden or indoors.

Autumn Fern works well in terrariums, where the enclosed humidity suits it. It also does well near a kitchen, where ambient moisture from cooking keeps the air around it from drying out. Move it outside for summer or into a sheltered garden spot in autumn, as it handles cooler temperatures well. It purifies indoor air and naturally adds humidity to a room. This plant is pet friendly.

  •   Autumn' Fern grows well in medium to bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the fronds.

Water it thoroughly once or twice a week, keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.

Autumn Fern does best in a rich, well-draining mix of peat or coco coir, perlite, and organic matter that retains moisture without becoming soggy.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 75°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units.

Autumn Fern is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9, tolerating temperatures down to around -20°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors year-round in states including Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Florida. It also does well outdoors across much of the mid-Atlantic and parts of the Midwest, including Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
  • Q: Does Autumn' Fern do well in low light or shade?
A: It handles shade and filtered light well, but keep it at least a few feet back from any south-facing window, where direct sun will scorch and bleach the fronds.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Autumn' Fern wilts slightly when the soil has dried out too much, and the fronds may begin to look limp or dull. Check the top inch of soil before watering.

Q: Is Autumn Fern safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: Does this fern need extra humidity indoors?
A: Autumn Fern does need higher humidity than most homes provide. Placing it near a kitchen, grouping it with other plants, or running a small humidifier nearby all help keep the fronds healthy.

Q: Can Autumn Fern be grown in a terrarium?
A: Yes, a closed or semi-closed terrarium works well because it holds the moisture and humidity the plant needs without frequent misting.

Q: How fast does this fern grow, and when should I fertilize?
A: Autumn Fern grows slowly to moderately, putting out new copper-toned fronds mainly in spring and summer. Feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during those active months and hold off through winter.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
