  •   Aeonium Zwartkop, also called Aeonium Black Rose, is a succulent in the Crassulaceae family native to the Canary Islands, where it grows on rocky hillsides and coastal cliffs. It has been a collector favorite for decades, growing both indoors and outdoors in mild, Mediterranean-style climates.

It forms bold, upright rosettes of deep burgundy-black leaves so dark they appear nearly purple in low light, shifting to forest green at the center in softer conditions. The fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves fan out in tight, layered clusters atop sturdy stems, creating a sculptural silhouette. As it matures, it naturally branches into a multi-headed specimen with clustering growth that develops over several seasons.

When night temperatures drop, it sends up tall, conical flower clusters of small yellow blooms, typically appearing in late winter to spring. Each rosette flowers once before producing new offsets that continue the plant's growth. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Move it to a bright windowsill, patio in summer, or outdoors in autumn in mild climates. Occasional rotation ensures even, symmetrical growth. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

  •   Aeonium Black Rose Zwartkop grows well in bright indirect light and may scorch in intense south-facing direct sun.

Water it every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, letting soil dry completely between waterings; reduce frequency significantly during summer dormancy.

Aeonium Zwartkop does best in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with perlite for extra drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 25 and 75°F and should be brought indoors before hard frost.

Aeonium Zwartkop grows slowly and needs only a light balanced fertilizer once in spring to support healthy rosettes.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best above freezing. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Gardeners in inland and upper portions of zone 9 states like Oregon and Nevada should bring it indoors or under cover during cold snaps.
  • Q: How often should I water Aeonium Black Rose Zwartkop?
A: Every 10 to 14 days during the growing season with soil drying completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in summer when dormancy begins.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Aeonium Black Rose Zwartkop is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: Why are the leaves on Aeonium Zwartkop turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves most commonly result from overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and allow soil to dry out fully between waterings.

Q: How fast does it grow?
A: Aeonium Zwartkop grows slowly, gradually producing new rosettes and branching stems over several seasons before developing into a multi-headed specimen.

Q: Can Aeonium Black Rose be propagated?
A: Cut a healthy rosette with a few inches of stem, let it callous for a day or two, then plant it in dry succulent mix; roots typically form within a few weeks.

Q: Does it adapt to indoor LED light?
A: Aeonium Black Rose adapts to bright office LED conditions, though leaf color may soften without natural light; rotate regularly for balanced growth.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
