  •   Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum', also called Purple Rose Tree Aeonium, is a rosette succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the Canary Islands where it grows on rocky hillsides and coastal cliffs. This succulent has become a favorite worldwide for its drought-tolerant nature, fitting seamlessly into both indoor and outdoor spaces.

It forms bold, flat rosettes of deep burgundy-purple leaves on woody, branching stems that give it a tree-like silhouette unlike most succulents. The spoon-shaped leaves have slightly fringed edges, and the color intensifies dramatically in full sun, shifting from deep plum to near-black at the tips. Aeonium 'Atropurpureum' can reach two to three feet tall, clustering over time into an impressive, sculptural mound.

When conditions are right, it produces tall conical clusters of small bright yellow flowers, typically in late winter to spring. A nighttime temperature drop encourages blooming, so moving it somewhere cooler in autumn can increase the chances of flowers appearing. After flowering, the individual rosette that bloomed will die back, but surrounding offsets carry on and fill the gap.

Aeonium 'Atropurpureum' grows well as a container plant on a sunny patio, in a Mediterranean-style garden bed, or near a bright indoor window. It is completely pet-friendly, making it a safe choice for homes with cats and dogs. Collectors value it for its dramatic color and tree-like growth habit.

  •   Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum' grows well in bright indirect light to full sun, with the deepest purple color developing in partial to full sun exposure.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, and once a month or less during summer dormancy when growth slows.

Aeonium 'Atropurpureum' does best in a well-draining succulent and cactus mix, ideally amended with extra perlite to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 65-75°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

Aeonium 'Atropurpureum' grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied once in early spring and once in autumn.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but needing frost protection below that. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, as well as along the Oregon and Washington coasts. Warmer southern Nevada valleys, coastal North Carolina, and milder pockets of New Mexico and Arkansas can also support it with minimal seasonal protection.
  • Q: Is Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum' safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes. This plant is non-toxic and completely safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What window placement works best indoors?
A: Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum' does best in a south or west-facing window with the brightest light available. The leaves can scorch against hot glass in peak summer, so rotate the pot regularly for even, upright growth.

Q: How big does Aeonium 'Atropurpureum' get?
A: It typically reaches two to three feet tall and wide indoors, and can grow taller in warm outdoor gardens over several years. Its clustering, tree-like habit means it gradually becomes a multi-stemmed statement plant.

Q: Can outdoor summer placement help the plant thrive?
A: Aeonium 'Atropurpureum' loves spending summer outdoors in a bright, sheltered spot. Cover it or move it under an overhang during heavy rain, as sitting water causes root rot.

Q: How do I propagate Purple Rose Tree Aeonium?
A: Take stem cuttings in spring or autumn, let the cut end callous for a day or two, then place it in dry succulent mix and water sparingly until roots establish.

Q: What signs show the plant needs water?
A: Purple Rose Tree Aeonium will slightly wilt or soften its leaves when thirsty. Wait until the soil is completely dry between waterings to avoid rot.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
