  •   Sempervivum 'Virgil Ford' is a frost hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia. This cultivar carries the genus's legendary toughness, growing from USDA Zone 4 through Zone 10, and grows as a cold hardy hens and chicks variety suited to both beginner and experienced growers.

'Virgil Ford' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from green to purple and red tones, deepening with sun exposure and cooler temperatures. It grows in a clustering habit, producing small offsets called "chicks" around the mother rosette. The compact rosettes have a geometric structure that stands out in containers and garden beds.

Like all sempervivums, individual rosettes are monocarpic, blooming once and then giving way to surrounding chicks. When mature, a rosette sends up a tall stalk topped with star-shaped blooms in summer, adding vertical accent before the nearby offsets fill the space. The plant propagates naturally through these offsets.

'Virgil Ford' is a wide spreader over time, ideal for rock gardens, alpine troughs, and balcony containers where it handles wind and rain with ease. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It survives outdoors through autumn and winter in most climates without protection. The plant is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs. Move it outside in summer to soak up full sun, and rotate the pot regularly for even, symmetrical growth.

  •   Sempervivum 'Virgil Ford' grows well in partial sun to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 10-14 days.

'Virgil Ford' does best in a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with extra perlite or coarse sand.

It tolerates temperatures from around -30°F in winter up to 90°F in summer and is impressively frost hardy.

'Virgil Ford' is a moderate to steady clusterer that rarely needs fertilizer, growing in lean soil with minimal feeding.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 10, tolerating winter lows down to -30°F. It grows outdoors in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Delaware. It also grows outdoors in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Florida, and Hawaii.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Virgil Ford' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What window direction works best for light?
A: Sempervivum 'Virgil Ford' performs best in south or west-facing windows. A south-facing window provides the most intense direct light, especially in morning and afternoon hours.

Q: How does 'Virgil Ford' spread and propagate?
A: It naturally produces small offsets or "chicks" around the base of each mature rosette. Detach the offsets once they have their own roots and pot them up or tuck them into a garden bed.

Q: What happens if watered too often?
A: 'Virgil Ford' develops root rot when soil stays wet. Check soil moisture by inserting your finger an inch deep; pot up only when the soil is completely dry to the touch.

Q: Can 'Virgil Ford' handle outdoor conditions like wind and rain?
A: It handles balcony wind and rain well. During wet seasons with prolonged heavy rain, consider providing light cover to prevent rot in winter.

Q: How large does it grow?
A: 'Virgil Ford' forms compact rosettes roughly 2 to 4 inches wide that cluster and spread outward over time as it produces offsets, eventually creating a full mat.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
