  •   Sempervivum Red West is a hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky alpine mountains of Europe and parts of Asia. Its mountain heritage makes it one of the most drought-tolerant succulents you can grow, growing where soil is thin and winters are severe.

The plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes packed with fleshy, pointed leaves in red and burgundy tones that deepen with sun exposure and cooler temperatures. Each rosette has a jewel-like structure that stands out in any arrangement. As a clustering hen and chicks succulent, it spreads by producing offsets, or "chicks," that radiate outward from the mother rosette to create a carpet-like colony over time.

During summer, star-shaped blooms appear on upright stalks in soft pink to reddish tones. Flowering happens once per rosette, after which the mother dies back naturally while the surrounding chicks continue growing. This is a completely normal part of its life cycle.

Sempervivum 'Red West' works well in rock gardens, container arrangements, balcony planters, and living walls. It handles outdoor conditions well, staying outside through autumn and tolerating wind and rain on exposed balconies. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It survives dry heated air indoors and is pet-friendly, so it poses no risk to cats or dogs.

  •   Sempervivum Red West grows well in full sun to partial sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every two to three weeks.

Sempervivum 'Red West' does best in a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or grit to prevent root rot.

It tolerates a wide range from 25°F up to 90°F, and is considered frost-hardy in suitable zones.

Sempervivum 'Red West' is a moderate to slow grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a light dose of diluted succulent feed in spring can encourage spreading.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 8, surviving winter lows down to around 40°F below zero in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors year-round across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. It often grows in transitional areas like parts of New Mexico, Nevada, and the higher elevations of California and Arizona with minimal winter protection.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum Red West?
A: Water every two to three weeks only after the soil has dried completely; overwatering is the most common mistake with this drought-tolerant succulent.

Q: Is this plant safe for pets?
A: Sempervivum Red West is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How much light does Sempervivum 'Red West' need?
A: Place it in a bright east or west window for four to six hours of direct light daily. Intense south-facing light can scorch the leaves.

Q: How does this succulent spread?
A: Sempervivum 'Red West' produces offsets called chicks around the base of the mother rosette; once a chick develops small roots, detach it and replant in well-draining soil.

Q: Is Sempervivum 'Red West' frost hardy?
A: It survives temperatures as low as 40°F below zero and stays outdoors through autumn and winter across most of the continental United States in USDA Zones 3 through 8.

Q: How large do individual rosettes get?
A: Sempervivum 'Red West' produces typical rosettes that reach two to four inches across, though colonies spread widely over time as offsets multiply into a living carpet.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
