  •   Sempervivum Karola is a cold hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the alpine mountains of Europe and western Asia. It evolved in rocky terrain where harsh winters, poor soil, and intense sun are the standard, which is why it ranks among the toughest succulents you can grow.

The plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in shades of purple, green, and red, with fleshy pointed leaves edged in fine cilia that catch light. As a clustering alpine succulent, it multiplies by producing offsets around the mother rosette, creating a dense, carpet-like mat over time. The compact rosettes stay relatively small, making this a standout choice for containers, rock gardens, and troughs.

It follows the monocarpic blooming habit typical of hens and chicks succulents, where a mature rosette sends up a tall flower stalk before setting seed and giving way to surrounding offsets. A cool night temperature drop, especially during the transition into spring, encourages blooming. Once an offset matures and takes its turn, the cycle continues across the clump.

Move it outside on balconies and in garden beds, where it handles wind, rain, and autumn chill without trouble. It tolerates dry heated indoor air during winter months and transitions outside for summer without issue. The plant is completely non-toxic and safe for households with cats and dogs. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Sempervivum Karola grows well in partial to full sun, getting at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply every one to two weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

Sempervivum 'Karola' does best in a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix amended with extra perlite or coarse grit.

It tolerates temperatures from around -30°F at its hardiest to summer highs above 90°F.

Sempervivum 'Karola' is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, growing in lean, nutrient-poor soil.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, surviving frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors across the North and Midwest in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It also grows outdoors in the mid-Atlantic and upper South including New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Missouri, and Arkansas, plus Connecticut, Rhode Island, and the Pacific Northwest in Oregon and much of Washington state, as well as the mountain regions of Utah and Nevada.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum Karola?
A: During the growing season, check the soil before watering; stick your finger an inch into the soil and water only if it feels completely dry. In winter, reduce frequency to once a month or less to prevent root rot in cooler conditions.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Sempervivum Karola is non-toxic and completely safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How cold hardy is Sempervivum 'Karola'?
A: It survives temperatures as low as -30°F and stays outdoors through autumn and winter without protection in most climates.

Q: How fast does it grow and spread?
A: Sempervivum 'Karola' grows at a slow to moderate pace, steadily producing offsets that cluster around the mother rosette and form a mat over a few seasons.

Q: How do I propagate Sempervivum 'Karola'?
A: Simply detach the small offset chicks from around the base of the mother rosette and replant them in well-draining soil where they establish quickly.

    Q: Can it grow indoors?
A: Sempervivum 'Karola' can be kept indoors temporarily as long as it receives bright, direct light from a sunny window; outdoor growth produces fuller rosettes and stronger color development.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
