  •   Sempervivum 'Itchen' is a hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, bred as a garden-tough cultivar of the classic houseleek. The genus originates from the mountains of Europe and the Mediterranean, where plants evolved to grow in rocky, exposed conditions with minimal water and sharp temperature shifts.

'Itchen' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves in tones that deepen with seasonal stress. Its clustering, upright growth style means it steadily fills containers and rock garden pockets with a carpet of geometric rosettes. Each rosette looks almost sculptural up close, with leaf texture and color variation that shifts through the year.

Like all sempervivums, 'Itchen' is monocarpic, meaning individual rosettes bloom once and then die back, while surrounding offsets continue growing. Star-shaped flowers typically appear in summer on tall stalks rising from mature rosettes.

It handles balcony wind and rain with ease, copes with dry heated air indoors, and can be moved outside in summer to look its best. It is non-toxic and pet-friendly, safe for homes with cats and dogs. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The plant readily produces offsets around the base of mature rosettes that can be gently separated and replanted. Individual rosettes typically reach 2-4 inches across, with the clustering habit gradually spreading to fill wider areas over time.

  •   Sempervivum 'Itchen' grows well in bright indirect light but appreciates direct sun outdoors; south-facing windows may cause leaf scorching indoors.

Water it every 2-3 weeks, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, and reduce frequency further in winter.

'Itchen' does best in a gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It tolerates a wide range from around 25°F downward, making it impressively frost-tolerant for a succulent.

'Itchen' is a slow to moderate grower that needs little fertilizer; one light feed in spring is beneficial at most.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 4-9, tolerating frost down to around 30°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors across the Pacific Northwest, Mountain West, and Northeast, including Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Itchen' pet-friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats, dogs, and other household pets.

Q: What window direction works best indoors?
A: Sempervivum 'Itchen' grows well in bright indirect light near an east or west-facing window; direct south sun can scorch the leaves indoors.

Q: How big do individual rosettes of 'Itchen' get?
A: Each rosette reaches 2-4 inches across, with the plant spreading gradually as offsets develop around the base.

Q: Can I propagate it easily?
A: 'Itchen' naturally produces offsets, or chicks, that separate readily and replant with minimal effort.

Q: Can 'Itchen' survive being left alone during travel?
A: It handles extended neglect well due to its low water needs and succulent tissue; soil must drain quickly to prevent rot during wet seasons.

Q: What happens if I overwater it?
A: Excess moisture causes root rot quickly; keep the soil dry between waterings to prevent fungal damage.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
