  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Wotan' is a rare collector succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain ranges of southeastern Europe. Unlike common hens and chicks, Wotan forms tight, non-offsetting rosettes that divide from the base rather than producing runners, making it a genuine find for serious growers seeking something distinct.

The rosettes develop deep burgundy to near-black purple leaves that intensify in color under full sun. Thick, pointed leaves have a smooth, waxy texture with finely fringed margins, and the compact clusters spread steadily into a low-growing mat over time. Individual rosettes stay roughly 3 to 5 inches across while it expands into a wider clustering form across several seasons.

Wotan blooms in summer, producing upright flowering stems with small star-shaped flowers typical of the Sempervivum genus. Outdoor placement provides the distinct nighttime temperature drop needed to trigger its bloom cycle. Like all Sempervivum, individual rosettes are monocarpic and die after flowering, but the surrounding offsets carry on to fill the space.

Wotan grows on balconies, in rock gardens, alpine troughs, and containers where it handles wind, rain, and drought. It stays outdoors through autumn and winter, surviving hard freezes that would finish off less rugged plants. The foliage is pet friendly. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Wotan' grows well in partial to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct sun daily for deep color development.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every 10 to 14 days.

Wotan does best in fast-draining gritty mix, such as cactus soil blended with coarse perlite or pumice at a 1:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F during the growing season and tolerates winter extremes down to -30°F.

Wotan is a moderate, slow-spreading grower that needs no regular fertilizer, though a light diluted feed in spring supports healthy rosette development.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9, tolerating cold down to -30°F with ease. It grows outdoors year-round across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. It also survives in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida's northern regions with good drainage and afternoon shade during the hottest months.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Wotan' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How do I propagate it?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Wotan' propagates by division since rosettes split from the base rather than producing runners. Simply separate the offsets in spring and replant them in well-draining gritty soil.

Q: Can Wotan stay outside through winter?
A: Yes, it survives hard freezes when left outdoors year-round, though shelter from prolonged heavy rain prevents rot.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: Wotan develops yellow leaves due to overwatering or poorly draining soil. Lower leaves naturally yellow and drop with age, which is completely normal.

Q: How big does Wotan get?
A: Individual rosettes form roughly 3 to 5 inches across and spread gradually into a wider clustering mat over several seasons.

Q: Will it survive being left unwatered during a short trip?
A: Yes, Wotan tolerates up to ten days without water.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
