  •   Sempervivum 'Crimson Velvet' is a hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia. It belongs to the hens and chicks group, a lineage cultivated for centuries in rocky, well-drained alpine terrain. It grows both indoors and outdoors, offering beginner-friendly care and cold hardy performance.

Tight, jewel-like rosettes form in deep crimson and burgundy, each fleshy pointed leaf bearing a distinctly velvety texture. Crimson Velvet clusters naturally over time, creating dense, spreading mats in containers, rock gardens, and balcony planters. The plush, touchable quality of its leaves differs from smoother-leaved alpine succulents.

Individual rosettes bloom once, then make way for new offsets as the clump continues to expand and mature. The plant requires a drop in nighttime temperatures to trigger flowering in response to seasonal shifts.

Move it outside in summer to soak up full sun; it handles autumn and winter outdoors with ease. This frost hardy succulent tolerates wind, rain, and cold where tender varieties fail. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Individual rosettes reach two to four inches across, staying compact and tidy. Propagate it by separating offset rosettes, called chicks, and replanting them in fresh soil; they root quickly.

  •   Sempervivum 'Crimson Velvet' grows well in partial sun to full sun, requiring at least four to six hours of direct light daily for the deepest color.

Water it every two to three weeks during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering to once a month in winter.

Crimson Velvet does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus and succulent soil blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures from around 70°F down to -30°F at its hardiest, tolerating both warm summers and harsh winters without stress.

Crimson Velvet is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, thriving in lean, nutrient-poor soil.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost down to approximately -40°F in ideal conditions. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. It also grows outdoors in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Maryland, Delaware, Arkansas, and New Mexico.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Crimson Velvet' safe for pets?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: What window placement works best for ideal leaf color?
A: Sempervivum 'Crimson Velvet' develops its deepest crimson tones in south or west-facing windows with direct afternoon light; low light causes the rosettes to pale and stretch.

Q: How big do individual Crimson Velvet rosettes grow?
A: Each rosette reaches two to four inches across, with the clump spreading wider over time as offset chicks fill in.

Q: Can this succulent handle neglect during travel?
A: Crimson Velvet can go up to ten days without water in a pot with well-draining soil.

Q: How do you propagate Crimson Velvet?
A: Separate the small offset rosettes, called chicks, from the mother plant and replant them in fresh, well-drained soil; they root quickly.

    Q: What signals overwatering?
A: Soft, translucent, or mushy rosettes indicate too much moisture; reduce watering frequency and ensure soil dries completely between waterings.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
