  •   Sempervivum 'Black' is a cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia where it evolved to survive rocky, well-drained terrain and harsh alpine conditions. This genus has thrived for centuries in extreme climates, making it one of the toughest succulents available for both indoor and outdoor growing.

'Black' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with deep near-black to dark burgundy-purple fleshy leaves that deepen in color under bright light and cooler temperatures. The leaves are thick and pointed, often edged with fine ciliate hairs, and it produces offsets freely, spreading outward in a wide, ground-hugging mat. Leaf color shifts from green to burgundy-black depending on season and light exposure, making it a genuine color-changing succulent.

A night temperature drop triggers blooming, typically in summer when tall, upright flower stalks rise from mature rosettes. Once a rosette flowers, that rosette completes its lifecycle and dies back, though the surrounding offsets continue the colony indefinitely.

'Black' handles balcony wind and rain without trouble, staying outdoors well into autumn thanks to its impressive frost tolerance. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Plant it in rock gardens, balcony containers, and outdoor arrangements, or keep it indoors on a bright windowsill. It is pet-safe for cats and dogs, and it has a long history of edible and medicinal use in traditional European herbalism.

  •   Sempervivum 'Black' grows well in bright indirect light but tolerates direct sun and low-light conditions, though intense south-facing sun may scorch leaves in peak summer.

Water it deeply every 2 to 3 weeks, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent rot.

'Black' does best in gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix combined with perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 75°F indoors and is frost tolerant down to around -30°F in the ground.

'Black' is a vigorous spreader that fills containers and beds with offsets, needing only a light, balanced fertilizer once in spring.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below -30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Utah. It also performs outdoors in Oregon, Washington, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Black' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and other common household pets.

Q: How do I know if the soil is too wet?
A: Sempervivum 'Black' develops mushy leaves and brown-black stems when overwatered; always let soil dry fully between waterings.

Q: Can 'Black' stay outside in winter?
A: Yes. It remains outdoors through autumn and winter in Zones 3 to 8, handling frost, wind, and rain without any protection.

Q: How do I propagate it?
A: 'Black' propagates easily by separating the offsets, called chicks, from the mother rosette and replanting them in well-draining soil.

Q: Does 'Black' need much sun?
A: It adapts to bright indirect light, direct sun, and lower light conditions indoors or outdoors, making it very flexible for placement.

Q: How cold hardy is this succulent?
A: 'Black' survives temperatures as low as -30°F and grows across most of the northern and central United States.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
