  •   Echinocereus Rubispinus, also called Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus, is a columnar desert cactus native to the rocky slopes of southeastern Arizona and northwestern Mexico. This species grows well in arid, well-drained terrain at mid to high elevations and belongs to the Echinocereus genus, a group known for bold architecture and flowering.

Its dense, multicolored spine pattern wraps the cylindrical body in alternating bands of pink, purple, and white. It grows upright and gradually clusters over time, forming a tight mound with rigid, tightly packed spines that give the plant a jewel-like appearance. The spines remain colorful year-round, making this a colorful spine cactus even between blooms.

In late spring to early summer, it produces large magenta-pink flowers several inches across at the crown of mature stems. The blooms are long-lasting and showy, arriving when nighttime temperatures drop seasonally. A cool winter rest period is essential for triggering flowers the following year.

Rotate it regularly for even, symmetrical growth on all sides. Keep it away from AC or heater vents, which can stress the plant. Move it outside for the summer months with cover from rain. The plant is pet-friendly, though its rigid spines can cause minor skin or paw irritation on contact, so place it on a high shelf away from small children and curious pets. The fruit of Echinocereus species has a history of edible and medicinal use among indigenous communities.

  •   Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus - Echinocereus rigidissimus ssp. rubispinus grows well in direct, full sun for at least six hours daily.

Water it deeply every two to three weeks during summer, then cut back to once monthly in winter.

Echinocereus Rubispinus does best in fast-draining cactus mix blended with coarse perlite or pumice.

It prefers temperatures between 50–95°F and tolerates brief dips to around 10°F when kept dry.

Echinocereus Rubispinus is a slow to moderate grower; feed once in spring with diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 7–11, tolerating frost down to around 10°F when kept dry. It grows outdoors in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Hawaii. Warmer pockets of Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Oregon, and Washington can also support outdoor growth with proper drainage and frost protection.
  • Q: Is Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus - Echinocereus rigidissimus ssp. rubispinus pet-friendly?
A: Though the stiff spines can cause minor skin or paw irritation on contact, keep it out of reach of curious pets and small children.

Q: What happens if this cactus gets too much water?
A: Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus - Echinocereus rigidissimus ssp. rubispinus develops yellowing of the spines or body, often paired with soft spots and root rot. Let the soil dry completely between waterings and ensure drainage holes are clear.

Q: How much light does Echinocereus Rubispinus need to develop even growth?
A: Rotate the pot regularly in a spot that receives direct sun for at least six hours daily so it develops symmetrical growth on all sides.

Q: Can this plant survive being away during travel?
A: Echinocereus Rubispinus stays dry and unharmed for ten days without water, making it suitable for frequent travelers.

Q: How do you propagate Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus?
A: Gently detach an offset from the base of a clustering stem, let it callous for a few days, then plant it in dry cactus mix. It can also be grown from seed, though that process is slower.

Q: Is there a drought-tolerant cactus that blooms reliably?
A: Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus produces large magenta-pink flowers each late spring to early summer when given a cool winter rest, combining drought tolerance with consistent flowering.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
