  •   Espostoa melanostele, also called Peruvian Old Lady Cactus, is a rare columnar cactus native to the dry slopes and valleys of Peru. It belongs to the genus Espostoa and grows well in the bright, arid conditions of higher elevations.

Dense silky white wool and hair coat the entire column, giving it a fluffy, woolly appearance. Beneath this soft exterior, sharp spines are hidden along the ribs, creating textural contrast against the white covering. The plant grows upright in a classic columnar form.

Mature specimens produce tubular white to pinkish nocturnal flowers that emerge from a specialized woolly flowering zone called the cephalium. Blooming is most likely when the plant experiences a natural nighttime temperature drop, so cooler autumn and winter conditions favor flowering.

This drought-tolerant cactus tolerates dry heated indoor air well and survives alone for up to ten days without water. Move it outside for summer in a sunny, sheltered spot, though it needs protection from rain. The concealed spines pose a hazard, so place it on a high shelf away from small children.

  •   Peruvian Old Lady Cactus - Espostoa melanostele grows well in full direct sun, needing at least 4-6 hours daily, and benefits from regular rotation for even growth.

Water it deeply but infrequently, roughly every 2-3 weeks in summer and once a month or less in winter, letting soil dry completely between waterings.

Espostoa melanostele does best in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix that never stays soggy around the roots.

It prefers temperatures between 50-90°F and should be protected from frost and cold drafts from AC or heaters.

Espostoa melanostele is a slow-growing cactus that needs only a light balanced cactus fertilizer applied once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 9-11, where winter temperatures stay above 25-30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Protected microclimates across the Gulf Coast, Southwest, coastal Oregon, and parts of New Mexico also support year-round outdoor cultivation.
  • Q: How often should I water Peruvian Old Lady Cactus - Espostoa melanostele?
A: Every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer, then cut back to once a month or less in winter. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.

Q: How much light does it need?
A: Peruvian Old Lady Cactus - Espostoa melanostele needs several hours of bright, direct sunlight daily. Rotate it periodically so all sides develop the woolly coat evenly.

Q: Is Espostoa melanostele safe around pets?
A: It is generally pet-friendly, though the concealed spines can cause minor irritation on contact. Keep curious pets away from it.

Q: Can I move it outdoors in summer?
A: Espostoa melanostele loves spending summer outside in a sunny, sheltered spot. Protect it from rain and bring it back indoors before overnight temperatures drop in autumn.

Q: How fast does Peruvian Old Lady Cactus grow?
A: It grows slowly. Expect modest but steady upright growth over the years with proper sun and minimal watering.

Q: Is this cactus good for beginners?
A: Peruvian Old Lady Cactus tolerates dry indoor air well and is forgiving of neglect. Its dramatic appearance may suggest otherwise, but it requires no special care.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
