  •   Foxtail Agave, also called Agave attenuata, is a rare, architectural succulent native to the rocky hillsides and slopes of central Mexico. It is drought tolerant and has adapted to grow in dry, sun-drenched environments with minimal water, earning a place in homes and gardens across the world for its distinctive upright form.

Agave attenuata grows in a bold, upright rosette that clusters over time, creating a sculptural display. Its lance-shaped leaves are soft and flexible compared to many agaves, with a pale gray-green to blue-green hue and gently serrated edges. The foliage radiates symmetrically from the center in a fountain-like form.

Mature plants produce a tall, dramatic flower spike that can rise several meters above the rosette, bearing densely packed clusters of creamy yellow blooms. Flowering occurs once the plant reaches maturity and is a once-in-a-lifetime event for that individual rosette. Because it produces pollen and potential allergens during bloom, keep this in mind if anyone in your household has sensitivities.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer to soak up natural light. It tolerates the dry heated air found in most homes during winter. Agave attenuata typically reaches two to four feet tall and wide indoors, though plants grown in the ground in warm climates grow considerably larger. Its clustering habit means it will slowly produce offsets around the base over time.

  •   Foxtail Agave grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, adapting to most bright spots indoors or out.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every two to three weeks indoors.

Agave attenuata does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with coarse perlite or grit to prevent soggy roots.

It prefers temperatures between 50-90°F and should be protected from hard frost and freezing conditions.

Agave attenuata is a slow to moderate grower that needs only a light, balanced fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before frost damage becomes a concern. It grows outdoors year-round across California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Coastal areas of Oregon, the warmer pockets of New Mexico, and parts of North Carolina's coast also fall within range for outdoor growing.
  • Q: How often should I water Foxtail Agave?
A: Every two to three weeks indoors during the growing season, letting the soil dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month or less.

Q: Is it safe around pets and children?
A: Foxtail Agave can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, and cats and dogs should not be left to nibble on it. Place it on a high shelf out of reach of both pets and small children.

Q: How much light does Agave attenuata need to avoid scorching?
A: It can scorch in an intense south-facing window with no airflow. Bright indirect light to full sun with air circulation works best.

Q: What size will it reach indoors?
A: Agave attenuata typically reaches two to four feet tall and wide indoors, though it grows considerably larger when planted in the ground in warm climates.

Q: Can Agave attenuata survive a trip without watering?
A: Yes, it can go up to ten days without water.

    Q: Is propagation possible?
A: Agave attenuata produces offsets around the base over time, which can be removed and potted separately once they develop roots.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
