The Alocasia 'Melo' (often sold as Alocasia rugosa) is a compact, rhizomatous tropical perennial of the Araceae family, highly sought after for its unique foliage texture. Classified as a "Jewel Alocasia." The plant is native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia (e.g., Borneo, Indonesia).
The leaves are its star feature. They are extraordinarily thick, leathery, and deeply corrugated (rugose), resembling hardened velvet or reptile skin. This unique texture and color make it a prized centerpiece for plant collectors.
Flowering is rare when grown as an indoor houseplant. Like other Alocasia, it produces an inconspicuous arum flower (a white or greenish spathe/spadix). Its ornamental value is entirely in its leaves.

Prefers bright, indirect, or filtered light.
It is important to find a balance. Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry. It prefers to be slightly drier than other Alocasia varieties but does not tolerate drought.
Requires a chunky, airy, and very well-draining potting mix to prevent root rot.
It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C).
