  •   Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variegata is a succulent in the Crassulaceae family native to the rocky outcrops and scrublands of South Africa. It has adapted to grow in bright, dry conditions with excellent drainage, and grows quickly.

The short name "Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variega" comes from its most recognizable trait: pairs of triangular leaves that stack tightly around a central stem in a spiral pattern, almost like tiny buttons threaded on a string. The leaves are green, cream, and soft yellow, with blush-pink edges that deepen under bright sun. It grows upright and clumping when young, then develops trailing stems as it matures, reaching roughly 2 inches tall in its compact form.

It produces small clusters of pale yellow to white star-shaped flowers in late winter to spring. A cool nighttime temperature drop in autumn encourages blooming.

Hang it in a basket with sturdy support, or place it on a shelf where the trailing stems can spill freely. Move it outside in summer to a bright, sheltered spot, but bring it inside before heavy rain or frost arrives. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Keep it away from pets and small children, as it is toxic if ingested and its sap can irritate skin and paws. It also propagates easily from stem cuttings.

  •   Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variegata grows well in bright indirect light to partial or full sun, but can scorch in intense south-facing windows.

Water it every 10-14 days in summer, reducing to about once a month in winter, always letting soil dry completely between waterings.

Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variega does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with 30-50% perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 65-80°F and must be protected from frost below 30°F.

Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variega grows quickly and needs only light feeding with diluted balanced succulent fertilizer once or twice during the growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to 25-30°F before needing frost protection. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. It also grows in sheltered coastal areas of Oregon and Washington, and in zone 9 pockets of New Mexico, Arkansas, and parts of the Pacific Northwest with minimal winter protection.
  • Q: Is Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variegata toxic to pets?
A: Yes, it is toxic if ingested by cats, dogs, or other pets, and its sap can cause skin and paw irritation. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach.

Q: Can I leave my plant unwatered for a week or two?
A: Variegated String of Buttons - Crassula perforata f. variegata can tolerate extended periods between waterings due to water storage in its succulent leaves.

Q: What happens if Variegated String of Buttons gets too much direct sun?
A: Intense south-facing sunlight can scorch the leaves. A bright spot with some afternoon shade or morning sun exposure works well.

Q: How should I display this plant indoors?
A: Variegated String of Buttons looks best in a hanging basket where its trailing stems can spill over, or on a shelf near a bright window.

Q: Can I propagate Variegated String of Buttons at home?
A: Yes, it propagates easily from stem cuttings. Allow the cut end to callous for a day or two, then place it in dry succulent mix and water lightly once roots appear.

Q: Can this plant survive outdoors year-round where I live?
A: Variegated String of Buttons grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 9-11, including much of the South and Southwest. In cooler zones, bring it inside before frost.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
