  •   String of Hearts Variegated, also called rosary vine plant or chain of hearts plant, is a trailing succulent vine from the Ceropegia genus native to South Africa. It grows naturally over rocky slopes and through brush, developing long cascading vines that grow well on neglect and drought.

The leaves are small and heart-shaped, with creamy white, soft pink, and silvery-green variegation splashed across each pair. These are strung along purple stems that trail and cascade downward. The pink blush in the variegation intensifies under bright light, shifting the overall appearance as conditions change. Vines reach 2-4 feet or longer indoors, making it a trailing houseplant suited to hanging displays or high shelves.

Small tubular flowers in soft purple and magenta tones appear in late summer through autumn when conditions are right. Blooms are more likely when the plant experiences a slight drop in nighttime temperatures. A cooler windowsill in the evening can encourage flowering.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Rotate it every few weeks so all sides receive even light and growth stays symmetrical. Move it outside in summer to soak up warmth, though it needs cover from rain to protect the vines. Keep it on a high shelf out of reach of pets and children.

  •   String of Hearts Variegated needs bright indirect light or partial sun but scorches in harsh south-facing windows.

Water it every 10-14 days in summer and reduce to once every 3-4 weeks in winter, letting soil dry completely between waterings.

String of Hearts Variegated grows well in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60-80°F and away from AC vents and heater drafts.

String of Hearts Variegated is a trailing vine that grows fastest in spring and summer; feed monthly with balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength during the growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating temperatures down to around 25-30°F with brief exposure only. Year-round outdoor growing suits warmer states including Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, as well as coastal areas of Oregon and Washington. Gardeners in Nevada, New Mexico, Arkansas, and parts of North Carolina and Virginia may grow it outdoors in sheltered, frost-free microclimates.
  • Q: How often should I water String of Hearts Variegated, and what happens if I forget?
A: It signals thirst by wilting and recovers quickly once watered. Letting the soil dry completely between waterings prevents root rot.

Q: Is it safe for cats, dogs, and children?
A: String of Hearts Variegated is non-toxic and generally considered safe for pets and children.

Q: Can String of Hearts propagate easily?
A: It propagates quickly from stem cuttings in water or soil, or from the small tubers that form along the vines. Cuttings root best in warm, bright conditions.

Q: How do I keep the variegation vibrant and colorful?
A: String of Hearts shows its best pink and white coloring in bright indirect light. Extended time in low light dulls the variegation.

Q: Why does String of Hearts need rotating, and how often?
A: Rotate it every few weeks so all sides receive even light and the plant grows symmetrically instead of leaning toward one light source.

Q: Can it survive a week away from home without special preparation?
A: String of Hearts can go up to ten days without water. Water it thoroughly before you leave.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
