  •   Senecio radicans String of Bananas is a trailing succulent in the Asteraceae family, native to the drier regions of South Africa. There it sprawls across ground and rocky outcrops, storing water in its curved leaves to survive extended dry periods. It is drought tolerant and works well as a hanging vine.

String of Bananas gets its name from its signature banana-shaped leaves, each one plump, glossy green, and slightly curved with a translucent stripe running along the top. The stems trail and vine freely, cascading over pot edges and hanging baskets. Individual leaves are small and closely spaced along the stems, creating a dense appearance as the vines elongate.

In autumn or winter, when temperatures drop at night, it produces clusters of small white to pale lavender daisy-like flowers with a light, sweet cinnamon fragrance. Blooms are not guaranteed every year but become more likely with seasonal temperature fluctuations. The plant can reach 2 to 3 feet or longer with consistent care and bright indirect light.

Position String of Bananas in a hanging basket or near a bright window. Rotate the pot every couple of weeks for balanced growth, and keep it away from air conditioning or heating vents, which stress the stems. It handles dry indoor air well and can move outside to a sheltered spot during summer months, though it should be protected from heavy rain. The sap causes skin and paw irritation in cats and dogs, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach of pets and children.

  •   Senecio radicans String of Bananas grows well in bright indirect light or partial sun for 4 to 6 hours daily.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

String of Bananas grows well in fast-draining cactus or succulent mix blended with coarse perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 80°F and should be protected from temperatures below 30°F.

String of Bananas is a moderate-to-fast trailer; feed once monthly in spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 30°F but not sustained frost. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, coastal Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. It also does well in the warmer pockets of New Mexico and Arkansas, as well as Gulf Coast areas.
  • Q: How often should I water Senecio radicans String of Bananas?
A: Every 10 to 14 days during spring and summer. Pull back to once every three to four weeks in winter, always letting the soil dry out fully first.

Q: Is it safe to keep around pets?
A: Senecio radicans String of Bananas has sap that irritates skin and paws, so cats and dogs shouldn't nibble on it. Place it on a high shelf well away from pets and small children.

Q: Can String of Bananas scorch in bright light?
A: Yes. Direct, hot south-facing sunlight can scorch the leaves. It performs best a few feet back from an east or west-facing window.

Q: How do I propagate it?
A: String of Bananas propagates easily from stem cuttings. Snip a healthy stem, let the cut end callous for a day or two, then lay it on or press it into dry succulent mix; roots appear within two to three weeks.

Q: Can String of Bananas go outside in summer?
A: Yes, it loves a warm, sheltered outdoor spot with bright indirect light during warm months. Cover it from heavy rain and bring it back inside before autumn temperatures drop.

Q: How large does it get?
A: String of Bananas develops trailing stems that can reach 2 to 3 feet or longer with good light and consistent care. It is available in 2-inch, 4-inch, and 6-inch pot sizes.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
