  •   Senecio herreanus String of Watermelons is a trailing succulent native to the semi-arid regions of Namibia and southern Africa. It sprawls across rocky hillsides in its natural habitat, cascading over ledges and storing water in its plump, patterned leaves to survive extended dry spells.

The leaves are bead-like ovals, each one striped with translucent lines that resemble a tiny watermelon rind. The vines trail for several feet, making it a visually distinctive cascading succulent for indoor or outdoor display. Leaf color shifts from green to softer tones depending on light intensity and seasonal changes.

In spring or summer, small brush-like flowers appear in white to pale yellow, often triggered by a slight drop in nighttime temperatures. The blooms carry a faint, lightly sweet fragrance.

Move it outside to a sheltered spot in summer, but protect it from heavy rainfall since excess moisture leads to rot. Rotate the pot regularly so all sides receive even light exposure. Keep it away from direct blowing air from AC vents and heaters, though it handles dry heated indoor air without issue. Grow it in a hanging basket, on a high shelf, or in a bright window where the vines can trail freely.

  •   Senecio herreanus String of Watermelons grows well in bright indirect light or partial sun and scorches easily in direct afternoon south-facing windows.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, reducing to once every 3 to 4 weeks in winter.

String of Watermelons does best in a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with perlite to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 80°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

String of Watermelons grows at a moderate pace and benefits from diluted balanced fertilizer applied once monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, where temperatures rarely drop below 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and the Oregon coast. In zones 10 and 11, including Florida, Hawaii, and the warmest pockets of Southern California and South Texas, it serves as a long-term outdoor trailing display plant.
  • Q: How often should I water Senecio herreanus String of Watermelons?
A: Water deeply when the soil is completely dry. The leaves will look slightly shriveled when moisture is depleted.

Q: Is it safe around pets and children?
A: Senecio herreanus String of Watermelons can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so cats and dogs should not nibble on it. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of pets and small children.

Q: What window placement works best for String of Watermelons?
A: Bright indirect light from an east or west-facing window works well. Avoid placing it directly in a south-facing window where afternoon sun can scorch the striped leaves.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Stem cuttings are the easiest method. Snip a healthy vine, let the cut end callous for a day or two, then lay it on top of well-draining succulent mix. String of Watermelons roots develop within a few weeks with warmth and bright indirect light.

Q: Can String of Watermelons survive outside in summer?
A: It thrives in a warm, sheltered outdoor spot in summer, but cover it from heavy rainfall. Bring it indoors once nighttime temperatures start dropping in early autumn.

Q: How large does this plant get?
A: String of Watermelons vines can grow several feet long over time, making it ideal for hanging baskets or high shelves.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
