  •   Senecio crassissimus, also called Vertical Leaf Senecio, is a drought tolerant succulent native to Madagascar. A member of the Senecio genus in the Asteraceae family, it grows well in the dry, rocky landscapes where it originated and brings that same architectural presence to any home or collection. It adapts well to indoor windowsills and outdoor patios.

Its upright paddle-shaped leaves grow perpendicular to the stem, stacking like silver-green propellers along each branch. The leaves are thick, waxy, and edged with a purple-violet outline that deepens when exposed to brighter light. Its upright, columnar growth habit gives it a geometric, sculptural form.

Small yellow daisy-like flowers appear in late winter to spring when the plant reaches maturity, typically triggered by cooler night temperatures in autumn and early winter. Move it to a slightly cooler location in the evening during this season to encourage blooming. The plant produces pollen and allergens, so it may affect anyone in your home with sensitivities.

It tolerates dry heated air well and handles periods of drought without extra attention. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer to a bright, sheltered spot, keeping it covered from heavy rain. The sap can cause skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf away from cats, dogs, and small children.

  •   Vertical Leaf Senecio - Senecio crassissimus grows well in bright indirect light to full sun, ideally near a south or west-facing window. Rotate it regularly for even, upright growth on all sides.

Water it every 10 to 14 days during spring and summer, then cut back to once every 3 to 4 weeks in winter, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Senecio crassissimus does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 85°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop below 40°F, as it does not tolerate frost.

Senecio crassissimus is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a diluted balanced succulent fertilizer applied once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11. It grows outdoors year-round across much of California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, as well as along the mild Oregon and Washington coasts. In cooler states like North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, and New Mexico, it grows as a container plant that spends summers outside and winters indoors.
  • Q: How often should I water Vertical Leaf Senecio - Senecio crassissimus?
A: During spring and summer, water when the top inch of soil is dry. In winter, extend the interval as the plant enters dormancy and needs far less moisture.

Q: Can I move this plant outside in summer?
A: Vertical Leaf Senecio - Senecio crassissimus thrives outdoors in a bright, sheltered spot during warm months. Protect it from heavy rain and bring it inside before temperatures drop below 40°F.

Q: What window direction works best for Senecio crassissimus?
A: A south or west-facing window gives the most light. If placing it near a south-facing window in peak summer, watch for leaf scorch on extremely hot afternoons.

Q: Is this plant safe around pets and children?
A: The sap of Senecio crassissimus can cause skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children.

Q: How do I propagate Vertical Leaf Senecio?
A: Stem cuttings are the easiest method. Allow the cut end to callous for a day or two before placing it in dry succulent mix, then water sparingly until new roots establish.

Q: Does Vertical Leaf Senecio need frequent watering?
A: It can go up to ten days without water during the growing season and several weeks in winter when dormant, making it suitable for those who travel occasionally.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
