  •   Senecio vitalis 'Serpents', also called Blue Chalk Fingers, is a drought-tolerant succulent native to South Africa's coastal regions. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and has gained attention among collectors for its blue-grey foliage and finger-like growth pattern.

Serpents produces thick, cylindrical leaves that grow upright in dense clusters, resembling pale blue fingers reaching skyward. Each leaf has a smooth, waxy texture with a powdery blue-grey coating that deepens in bright light. The plant typically reaches 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads 4 to 8 inches wide, making it suited for containers and small spaces.

It produces small white or cream-colored flowers during late spring and summer when grown in optimal conditions. The plant is toxic to cats and dogs, so keep it out of reach of pets and small children, as the sap can cause skin irritation.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer for patio or balcony enjoyment, or keep it indoors year-round under office LEDs. It tolerates dry heated air but scorches in direct south-facing windows and reacts poorly to direct air from air conditioning or heaters. Propagation is straightforward through stem cuttings that root readily in well-draining soil once cut ends callus for a few days.

  •   Senecio vitalis 'Serpents' - Blue Chalk Fingers grows well in bright indirect light but scorches in direct south-facing windows.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Serpents does best in well-draining cactus mix or regular potting soil with added perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 75°F and is not frost-tolerant.

Serpents is a slow to moderate grower requiring minimal fertilizing during spring only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11 and has no frost tolerance below 32°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, southern California, southern Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, southern Nevada, and parts of coastal Oregon. It can also thrive in protected microclimates within southern Alabama, Mississippi, and coastal North Carolina where temperatures rarely drop to freezing.
  • Q: How often should I water Senecio vitalis 'Serpents' - Blue Chalk Fingers?
A: During the growing season, water every 10 to 14 days when the top half of the soil feels dry. In winter, extend the interval to every 3 to 4 weeks as growth slows significantly.

Q: What happens if this plant gets too much direct sun?
A: Senecio vitalis 'Serpents' - Blue Chalk Fingers will scorch in south-facing windows receiving intense afternoon light, showing brown or bleached patches on the leaves.

Q: Can Serpents be propagated at home?
A: Stem cuttings root readily in well-draining soil. Let cut ends callus for a few days before planting them.

Q: Is there any risk to keeping it indoors year-round?
A: Position it away from heating vents, air conditioning units, and radiators. Dry air from these sources causes leaf damage and can lead to shriveling.

Q: How big does Blue Chalk Fingers get?
A: It typically reaches 6 to 12 inches tall with a spread of 4 to 8 inches.

Q: What are the frost limits for outdoor growing?
A: Blue Chalk Fingers dies below 32°F and must be brought indoors in cold climates. It only survives outdoors year-round in USDA zones 9 through 11.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
