  •   Senecio macroglossus 'Variegated', also called Wax Ivy, is a trailing succulent vine native to southern and eastern Africa, where it grows along forest margins and rocky slopes. This member of the Asteraceae family climbs and cascades through shrubby vegetation in its natural habitat, making it a fast-growing trailing plant with vining growth that works well indoors or outdoors.

The leaves are small and ivy-shaped with three to five pointed lobes that closely resemble English ivy. Each leaf is thick and waxy, with mid-green centers and irregular cream and pale yellow margins creating a creamy white variegated effect. The slender stems trail long and produce new growth along each node, developing a cascading form over time.

Small, daisy-like flowers appear in pale yellow during late winter to early spring, emerging at the stem tips with light fragrance. Variegated requires a drop in nighttime temperatures to trigger blooming, typically needing cooler conditions in autumn to set flower buds for the season ahead.

Hang it in a basket or set it on a high shelf to let the stems cascade downward. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, and position it out of reach of pets and small children since the sap can cause skin or paw irritation on contact. Move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, covering it from rain to prevent waterlogged soil.

  •   Senecio macroglossus - Variegated Wax Ivy grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct south-facing windows where the leaves can scorch.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the soil to dry out fully between waterings.

Variegated does best in a well-draining succulent or cactus mix combined with perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should stay away from cold drafts or sudden temperature drops below 50°F.

Variegated is a fast-growing trailing vine; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F to 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Hawaii, and New Mexico, overwintering outside along the Gulf Coast and in other frost-light regions within those zones.
  • Q: Is Senecio macroglossus - Variegated Wax Ivy safe for cats and dogs?
A: The sap can cause skin or paw irritation on contact, so keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of pets and small children.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Senecio macroglossus - Variegated Wax Ivy propagates easily from stem cuttings. Snip a 3 to 4 inch section just below a node, let the cut end dry for a day, then place it in dry succulent mix and water lightly after a week.

Q: How can I tell when Variegated needs water?
A: Stick your finger an inch into the soil. If any moisture remains, wait a few more days before watering.

Q: What happens if I overwater this plant?
A: Variegated's stems turn soft and mushy at the base, and the roots rot quickly in waterlogged soil. It recovers poorly from root rot, so err on the dry side.

Q: Can Wax Ivy grow under office or indoor LED lighting?
A: It grows under bright office LEDs placed close enough to provide consistent light throughout the day. Rotate the pot every couple of weeks so all sides receive even exposure.

Q: How do I get this plant to bloom indoors?
A: Wax Ivy needs cooler nighttime temperatures around 50°F to 55°F for several weeks in autumn to set flower buds. A bright, cool room or an unheated porch during that period can help trigger blooming.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
